In January of this year, Adam Surkan at the age of only 41, received a devastating diagnosis of Stage IV pancreatic cancer. Given his age, the initial prognosis was particularly challenging, with medical experts indicating that only 50% of patients with this type of cancer reach the one-year mark. The only treatment initially presented to Adam was palliative care.

Despite the difficult news, Adam has approached his journey with remarkable positivity and determination, resolute in his fight against the cancer. He recently learned about a progressive immunotherapy treatment with a high success rate for aggressive cancers, including his specific diagnosis. This innovative immunotherapy involves developing a patient-specific vaccine, contingent upon Adam meeting specific biological and medical indicators to ensure a high probability of success.

After extensive research, Adam applied to a compassionate care cancer clinic overseas, which has demonstrated success in treating some pancreatic cancer patients. The protocol used at this clinic is currently in clinical trials in the United States. It involves harvesting tumor tissue to create a custom-made vaccine designed to empower the body's immune system to combat the disease. As with any personalized treatment, the cost is substantial. However, Adam and his family have made the courageous decision to pursue this option, hoping for remission or, at minimum, a significant period of disease stability. Notably, some patients undergoing this procedure have experienced up to seven years of extended life, a remarkable outcome when considering that only 3% of Stage IV pancreatic cancer patients typically reach the five-year mark.

Crucially, this immunotherapy cannot be administered concurrently with traditional chemotherapy. Consequently, after many challenging rounds of chemotherapy, Adam has suspended that treatment to focus on the immunotherapy's potential for significant outcomes, rather than the palliative nature of his previous care. On a positive note, this decision has allowed Adam to enjoy a few summer months surrounded by family and friends while the clinical team plans his treatment and conducts necessary tests and biopsies.

The Path Forward: Funding and Support

This cutting-edge treatment is not available in Canada and is not covered by Canadian medical insurance or services. Unfortunately, the estimated cost of $110,000 USD, plus travel and related expenses, is beyond Adam's personal financial means. His family has explored various funding avenues through agencies and charities, but these efforts have yet to yield success. Based on recommendations from multiple sources, and with the encouragement of friends, we have established this fundraising page to help Adam and his family cover these significant costs.
