Back On Their Feet Family, one of the founding members of this group has found themselves in trouble, largely because of our country's ridiculous immigration laws. The family emigrated here via a visiting scholar program to a local university, and when that visa ended, switched to a student visa.  Student visas require that one family member be enrolled in an institution of higher learning, that no family members work other than the 20 hours per month in the student's discipline allotted to the student. This family has been following all the rules in hopes of getting a permanent visa: their home country is currently ravaged by civil war.  They have dual citizenship in Europe, but moved away when they found that their disabled children would not receive appropriate care in Europe, where invisible disabilities are often "treated" with harsh punishment. They found a way to work online internationally for a small amount of income that won't endanger their visa, but since the work is contract work which is paid when the work is approved, it isn't regular.  For this reason, they have fallen behind in paying rent and received a 10-day notice to evict a few days ago.  They are $4800 behind, but have been able to come up with 1200.00. Before coming to us, they exhausted every other resource they could think of: they called the City, the Homlessness Prevention Hotline, they asked friends and relatives.  They are not going to be able to make up this amount of money in a few days. Please be generous. Back on Their Feet is an Evanston, IL based Facebook group that provides resources to people in crisis. I represent the admin team of the group. We vet requests for fundraisers by first helping individuals requesting help with a bill navigate local Social Services, and after determining no other resources are available, fundraising for group members in crisis. The group is open to anyone who lives in the area served by the Evanston/Skokie school districts. Funds are disbursed directly to the payee of the bill via certified check, money order, or direct transfer.
