It is through flowing tears that I write this. A disaster has struck our community in Poplar, North Carolina, and Erwin, Tennessee of biblical proportions. As Todd and I await the confirmation of the total loss of our cabin, we have decided to turn our fear and sorrow into action. We have VERY limited communication with two of our friends that are in the midst of their own trauma on the ground there. What we have learned is that they are DESPERATE for our help. They do not know of such storms as we in Florida do. They are hungry, thirsty, and in tremendous need of fuel. Most have lost all. In our community alone, 73 people are still missing. Every power pole in Mitchell County is down. Water is compromised and undrinkable. Even if the stores were open, the roads are out completely. There is a sinkhole in front of our cabin shutting down the entirety of that highway. Those with generators have no fuel and no idea how they may get it.
We have learned over the years that these people are strong, independent, and resilient... but they are suffering the likes of which they could have never anticipated. I am putting out a call to action. Help us help them! As our neighbors on the ground are trying to figure out how to get fuel across the raging rivers 5 gallons at a time, we would like to raise money for the immediate need of first aid supplies, dehydrated meals, and bottled water. The long-term goal is to help them with the rebuild. Restoring this community will not happen quickly.
With these funds, we will buy the necessary supplies here in Florida and overnight them to our friends in Johnson County, Tennessee. He has access to these remote hills by utilizing the men that operate mountain tree trimming via helicopter. These supplies will be airdropped in the short term.
Any amount would be very appreciated. Thank you in advance from the great people of Poplar, North Carolina, and Erwin, Tennessee.
