Imitation of Art

The Story: An aspiring painter working as an Art Conservator finds himself in a dangerous position when he accidentally ruins a priceless masterpiece.

The Team: Imitation of Art is a film about the expendability of artists and artistry in the modern age. Its protagonist, the Conservator, pays his bills by restoring old paintings while pursuing his own painting career in his free time. Trapped imitating the paintings of other, more successful artists, he spreads himself thin between work and his original art until he finally buckles under the pressure of his demanding job. The repercussions will be severe.

Our film will take heavy influence from the art of the Romantic Era. We will attempt to capture, both visually and thematically, how romantic art emphasizes the singularity and creativity of each individual artist, a concept that especially applies to our protagonist. In an age when so much art is mass-produced and so many artists are exploited as cogs in media machines, we’d like to shed light on the joy of art for art’s sake and explore the dynamic between influence and imitation.
