I’m cutting it all off…
On the eve of my 30th birthday, in the final hours of my last day of 20s, before throwing what’s left of freedom’s fading flicker and myself headlong into the grips of the corporate grind and a futile attempt to “make something of myself” I will be symbolically and literally saying farewell to my greatest friend, my close companion, my Samwise Gamgee <3
A Poem of commemoration:
5467 days, 15 years together
Under 30 washes, 2.2 per year, if that
5+ years since last wash, peak streak
109cm at longest length, over a metre, math checks out
Weighing in at 300grams, tbh was hoping for more
Roughly 182 dreadlocks in total
The Details
- Monday 6th December, the hair on my head meets the scissors
- Between now and then the locks will flow free to turn as many heads, scar as many babies, and raise as many donos from people who have been telling me “you’d look so handsome if you just cut your hair” for years
- if we happen to absolutely blow this bad boy wide open and hit the double target figure of $40k, I will place the beard on the proverbial chopping block as well and do what I vowed to my 21 year old self I would never do again
The Cause
The World Bank estimates that this year alone they expect 150 million people to be forced into extreme poverty due to Covid-19. We know that children are the most vulnerable at the hands of poverty and the least able to defend themselves against it; UNICEF estimates that an additional 10,000 children are dying each month due to the effects of the pandemic.
Compassion
I’ve had the privilege of getting to see the work of Compassion first hand as well as witness how they do what they do from the inside for the last 3 years. Their holistic child development model works to release children from poverty, breaking its cycle. Compassion's work is research based to prove that it's effective.
Yemen Humanitarian Crisis
Yemen has been the largest humanitarian crisis in the world for the last 3+ years and there are currently over 11 million children in desperate need of assistance. The response to this crisis is severely underfunded. Every time I’ve thought about doing a fundraiser this has been top of the list of needs in the world. Charity navigator gives Save The Children and what they’re doing to combat this crisis the tick of approval.
The Pyramid Scheme
Any contribution to this final farewell will be met with acceptance and gratitude but we ain’t giving away the goodies for low level, bottom tier sweet nothings. For those of you wondering "why hasn't he just setup this fundraiser to go directly to the charities?", very big brain, very simple response: I couldn't find a platform that allowed you to nominate 2 charities to give to directly at the same time. Thus, I shall transfer the 50/50 split at completion of campaign and post the transaction receipts for complete transparency aka non of the dollarydoos are for me.
