Friends, family, and community members!
As many of you know, I’m Imani Love, and I will be attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the fall to study and pursue Creative Writing and performance! I have received $16,000 a year in scholarships based on the merritt of my submitted portfolio. I have been a student at Oakland School for the Arts for the past seven years. Originally I started in the school of Vocal Music, but transferred to the school of Literary Arts with the aim of exploring my passion for poetry. Since my switch I’ve tried to take advantage of all the opportunities in my various communities, in the hope of becoming the best writer that I can be. Taking advantage of these opportunities has lead me toward being apart of things like; being a finalist in the Oakland Youth Poet Laureate competition, performing at Oakland’s Millions March , becoming the champion of Youth Speaks 2015 Teen Poetry Slam , and most recently producing and publishing an independent collection of poems and photos entitled And Then The Church Says.
I create art for two reasons; to reflect , and as social activism . I also use my art to create a mirror to reflect society on itself as a form of activism. My writing has helped me process my experiences such as my grandma’s death, or the anxiety for my brother as a young black boy navigating through the world we live in. I think art, especially photography, music, and poetry reach people's emotions in the most direct way because they spark the conversations and reflection needed to ignite change. As an artist, I have a responsibility to activistism because without the disparities that in society, I wouldn't feel the need to create.
The interdisciplinary SAIC studio environment will further my growth by encouraging and demanding consistent production, finished projects and to take my own artistry seriously, to allow others to as well. SAIC is the school for me not only because it is located in a city that swept my breath from my chest, and inspires me in every square of the sidewalk, but because it will help me continue my growth as an artist in an interdisciplinary and talent filled environment. I belong at SAIC, and need it as badly as it needs me.
My fundsraising goal is currently set at $12,000. This is reflective of the financial gap that I will face each year between the money my family and I have, and the scholarships I have received. I will also be working throughout my college career to help lessen the gap as well! :)
Your contribution would go towards the following;
Room and board
Transportation
Books and supplies
Please help me, in any way you can, as I embark on this voyage to pursue my passions!
