It happened quickly, early March, I got a call from my younger sister Heather, who's suffered from Colitis her whole adult life, to find out she has a tumor on her colon and it could be cancer. This could be a result of her autoimmune disease as she suffers already from severe arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis with monthly infusions for nearly a decade.
A routine surgery should have removed it. A bi-pass Ostomy was necessary. That was horrifying enough. Upon surgery, they discovered the cancer had metastasized to her Peritoneal, the lining of her stomach. Game changer! They closed her up quickly. She needs Chemotherapy ASAP.
Heather's recovery from the surgery was hard. She had multiple infections in her incision and had to learn how to cope with an ostomy bag. Eating is hard; everything has to be liquid and flows through you way too fast.
This is unexpected at 49 years of age. There are little or no benefits beyond Employment Insurance which will barely cover keeping the lights on. Now she has to supply her ostomy bags! Thanks, OHIP for nothing. Off work and no paycheque (indefinitely).
Heather is a new Grandma (GG); her granddaughter was born amid her cancer battle.
Heather and Mike her husband of 9 years (together 16) now face downsizing while she's throwing up her chemo treatments. She turned 50 years old on day 2 of throwing up from chemotherapy.
I have to see if GoFundMe is a place where Heather can find peace of mind so she can focus on her real struggle - kicking cancer's ass!
Thank you for your time and consideration.
