Imagine-Nation Book Drive

My name is Kimberly Beenken and I am a Senior at Northland Pines SOAR High School. Every senior at SOAR is required to leave behind a lasting legacy to their community, and in this case world, as a graduation requirement. So, as my lasting legacy, I have created Imagine-Nation Book Drive. The books collected will be sent by ship to Nairobi, Kenya. Within this prosperous capital city, there are heavily populated slums. Within these slums are communities of people who do not have the financial means to get themselves out of their situation. These people live in houses made from metal cargo boxes, all of which are crammed together into very small plots of land.

The main school we will be working with is Cheleta Primary school.  This school has very minimal funding from the government and the whole school has only a handful of story books. Any books we receive for higher reading levels will be taken to New Dawn Academy which is a near by secondary school. Not only will I be sending books, but this July I will be going to Nairobi to personally deliver the books, renovate the library room at Cheleta, and volunteer at a medical camp hosted by the school.

I am in need of funds primarily to cover shipping costs, which will be roughly $6,000.  In order for the books to be received in Nairobi on time,  I would like to see this amount raised my the end of March.

Other expenses include purchasing items such as fabric and stuffing to create cushions to go in the library and sound absorption boards to go on the walls and bring the room color and excitement.  Any extra funds will go to this.

Lastly, it would be an amazing help to myself and the other handful of students who will be embarking on this journey with me to have some help with flight expenses. Based on my research, each ticket will cost roughly $1,230 round trip. There will likely be 3-4 other students joining me.  Even having a small fraction of ticket costs covered will be an immense help. We will be leaving on July 4th, 2019

I would be so thankful to you if you could help me out with this project. I am so excited to help out this community and school, and make lasting relationships. Hopefully this can grow into a long-term relationship between the north woods and the people of these Nairobi slums.
