Image Makers: A Visual Analysis of Indigenous Art

Donation protected

Boozhoo! (Hello!)

My name is Seth Thomas Sutton (miingahn naaniibwik // Standing Wolf) and I am raising funds to assist with the expenses for publication of a new research project and resulting publication, Indigenous Image Makers: A Critical Visual Analysis of Indigenous Art. (its current working title).

Who is Seth Thomas Sutton??

I am an Indigenous artist, activist, scholar and full-time faculty member and chair of the Arts & Humanities Department at Montcalm Community College in Sidney, MI. I currently hold Masters of Arts in Visual Arts & Critical Studies degree from Kendall College of Art and Design. In school, my concentration was post-colonial theory, critical race theory, semiotics, and cultural criticism.

I enjoy reading and researching a wide array of subjects, including: Western Art History, Art theory, Art criticism, Color Theory, Semiotics, Philosophy, Anthropology, Archeoastronomy, Indigenous cultures, decolonization of academia, Identity, Mythology, Visual Studies, Visual Rhetoric, Sociology, Psychology, Ethics, Eastly and Pre-historic American History, to name a few! HAHA!

What is the book about?

This project will be an in depth critical visual analysis of contemporary Indigenous art and a social critique on Western artistic culture.

I will begin the book with an analysis of contemporary culture, adding contextual information and theoretical modes of analysis pursuant to the subject of the research. The body of the book will develop and apply the theoretical lenses to a number of chosen artifacts, artworks, etc, through visual analysis. the summation of information will then be examined and extrapolated upon, giving the reader a better understanding and ability to read the visual language and better comprehend the meanings/ power visual images can hold.

Where Will your Donations Go?

Great Question! Your generous contributions will go towards the follow expenses:

• The physical publication/reproduction/distribution costs of the book through LuLu.com

• Copy editing and corrections of the text

• Vocal recordings of the book for audible and other audio-book platforms

• Field research and travel expenses (art gallery admissions, hotel fees, research materials, etc…)

I love the freedom and flexibility that self-publishing offers, however, the high costs of print media are major obstacles in the path to publication. this is why I need your help!

My Gift to YOU for your support:

ANY AND ALL donations, big or small, is one step closer to letting this research see the light of day.
