STORY

Want to join me in supporting a good cause? I'm raising money for Brain Injury Australia Limited and your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate a little or a lot. Anything helps. Thank you for your support. I've included information about Brain Injury Australia Limited below.

To help support the nationwide implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Brain Injury Australia is building a central clearinghouse of information and gateway to nationwide referral for optimising the social and economic participation of the over 700,000 Australians living with brain injury. Brain Injury Australia continues to drive multi-year public education campaigns devoted to: the leading causes of death and disabilities.

Why I am supporting this cause?

My life changed on March 21st 2018.
I received the call we don’t ever want to receive, it was from my family in Ireland.
As I finished work on this day, I saw my brother’s name calling.
The contact we share I am the sibling who calls home daily. ( The time zone and availability always made it hard for the family.) I knew immediately something wasn’t right. I answered the call and asked my brother “What’s wrong?” He responded, “Who told you? Frances what do you know?” I paused and said “Please tell me!” He then asked if I was sitting down. At this moment I went into a state of shock. I knew something had happened.
My brother advised my father had been in a critical accident at work. He said “Daddy is in Intensive care and will undergo life threatening surgery with a low risk of survival.”
I hung up the phone and called my friend, I couldn’t explain what was wrong but in a state of shock shouted. “Help me.”
My friend picked me up from work and took me home, figured out what had happened and tried to get me a flight straight away. Due to the time I could not fly on this day and waited a further 18hours to start the dreaded flight home to see my father. I watched my phone to I could board the plane the next day.
With constant contact with the hospital I knew that whilst I would be in transit my father would be out of surgery and I was praying he would make it through.
On March 22nd I arrived in Dublin, thankfully collected by a close friend from the airport and was taken straight to the hospital where I was able to see my father in intensive care.
At this moment my life changed, I visualised my daddy in a way I would never have imagined, the thoughts and images, the conversations in my mind that everything was normal just one day ago. All I could wonder was how and why?
I was met by the consultants and surgeons who explained what had happened my father and the extent of his injury.
A large amount of steel had fallen on my father’s head from a height, he was found around 2hours after the incident, transported to two different hospitals to assist in specialist care and increase his chance of survival.
My father had underwent surgery where a significant amount of his skull was removed to release pressure from his brain, his left eye and side of his face was distorted from the hit and they explained he was at high risk of further infection.
At this point I was uncertain what was next, I was very fortunate to have my close friend live close by the hospital who supported me in somewhere to stay and with things I needed to do to help my daddy and also my mum.
I spent 31 days in ICU with my daddy and a further 10 days in HDU. I spent every day with my father, I spoke of the good times, the memories we shared and the future we were looking forward to having.
My daddy was turning 70 on July 14th 2018. We had planned to travel to the USA together, my daddy dreamt of visiting Nashville Tennessee. We were so excited to share this milestone together.
I prayed every day for his recovery and watched him make little improvements and changes.
Thank you to the Royal hospital in Belfast and Musgrave Park my daddy survived.
Daddy then was moved to a hospital closer to where my family are from. (Craigavon.) Between this hospital and another my father spent a further four months participating in rehabilitation and ongoing assessments and testing.
Soon after this lengthily programme of care we met with my daddy’s surgeon, consultant, rehab team and nurses.
In this meeting we were made aware my father would not be capable of going home, his brain injury and recovery wasn’t suffice to live alone and look after himself.
This news and meeting was one I will never forget.
We then had to proceed to find a suitable care home for my daddy. I am very fortunate that my two aunties were a support and assisted in finding a convenient location and beautiful care home for my dad.
The difference in time zones and meetings with different consultants and departments proved challenging for me as I have resided in Sydney 14+ years but can share that with the support of three very close friends and my aunties I was able to be included in all decisions for my father’s future.
The six month period and transition to my father was moved to a permanent home has been a real life check in for me. The feelings, the pain and suffering for a small family and being the key source of support was something I never would want anyone to suffer. I want to have the ability to support and care for people who have been through similar situations and support the research and recovery for others.
I have chosen to climb Mount Everest Base Camp on the one year anniversary of my daddy’s accident. I want to raise funds for an amazing charity, Brain injury Australia and help support others through difficult times, assist in the funding of research and recovery and make a difference to those patients and their families.
I am happy to share my story and want everyone to know how grateful I am that my father has survived such a traumatic accident. My daddy will never be able to share this with you but I know he would support this cause and also do the same, raising awareness and support and always helping people when possible.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, please help with any donations for this amazing charity and I will reach Mount Everest Base Camp.

Love Frances.
