I'm Walking 100 Miles for American Cancer Society

In 2014, my life was totally upended when I was diagnosed with stage 3, triple negative breast cancer at the age of 29. I had finally landed a job at a big law firm and I was ready to figure out what my adult life might look like. But my body had other plans.

At the time, I couldn't imagine a future for myself after cancer. The treatments were grueling. They have to literally poison, cut, and burn cancer patients in order to get the cancer out of our bodies. The two years that followed my diagnoses were the most grueling and formative years of my life.

With the help of my family, my friends, and an incredible medical support team I was able to slowly rebuild my life. Today, over ten years later, I look at the three boys in my life - the partner who sees all of me and holds me up through all of life's challenges, and the two rambunctious kids I was forced to plan for even before I met him - and I pinch myself. I can't believe this is my life. And I know we aren't all this lucky.

I'm walking this month to support those who may not happen to have that 5 star insurance, or the family that will walk unlimited miles, literally and figuratively, to aid their recovery. When I was diagnosed, I did the 39 mile Avon walk for breast cancer three years in a row. I found so much solace in the training walks with my dad, my sister, and my sister's best friend. Unfortunately, Avon had poor donation practices and wasn't donating that money where it needed to go.
