Hola, soy Iliana y esta es mi historia.
El 26 de diciembre de 2023 me diagnosticaron cáncer. Al principio, debido a múltiples síntomas, entre ellos dolor en la zona abdominal y espalda baja, acudí a urgencias y me hicieron la tomografía computarizada. Unas horas más tarde, el médico entró y dijo que vio algunas anomalías en los ovarios que podrían ser cáncer. Luego de una laparoscopia diagnóstica para obtener muestras e imágenes y la biopsia, concluyeron que estaba iniciado en el apéndice lo cual es muy raro y había hecho metástasis a ovarios, útero, colon, recto, intestinos, bazo y cavidad peritoneal. Un Adenocarcinoma de Apéndice.
El apéndice no tenía un tumor, pero dentro de las paredes se desarrolló una sustancia cancerosa llamada Mucina y pronto comenzó a extenderse contaminando todo lo demás, y cuando comencé a sentir los síntomas, ya estaba demasiado extendido y se consideró un cáncer en etapa 4.
En enero y febrero de 2024, mi esposo me llevo a urgencias porque mi vientre se estaba llenando de un líquido llamado Ascitis, uno de los síntomas de la enfermedad, y me harían un procedimiento llamado Paracentesis para retirar el líquido acumulado en la cavidad abdominal. La cantidad de líquido drenado comenzó con 800 ml, luego tres semanas después fue de 2,70 litros, luego de 3,05 litros la semana siguiente y cinco días después fue de 3,45 litros.
En febrero comenzó la quimioterapia, ya en una semana el líquido comenzó a ser menor, bajó a 2,20 litros y lo mismo la semana siguiente. Las sesiones de quimioterapia fueron ocho en total y se realizaron cada dos semanas y en cada sesión tenía una bomba con uno de los medicamentos de quimioterapia durante 2 días para luego regresar al centro de infusión y retirarla.
La quimioterapia estaba siendo muy efectiva ya que después de la tercera infusión ya no tenía acumulación de líquido en el vientre y la cantidad que quedaba era tan pequeña que no valía la pena hacer más el procedimiento de drenaje.
Terminé las infusiones de quimioterapia el 17 de mayo de 2024.
El 25 de junio se realizó otra cirugía laparoscópica diagnóstica para tomar nuevas imágenes y muestras, después del tratamiento de quimio y verificar cómo se había comportado la enfermedad, ya que la esperanza era que se neutralizara y redujera lo más posible para extraer todo lo contaminado.
Después de que la junta tumoral del hospital discutió mi caso en detalle, decidieron que valía la pena intentar realizar una cirugía y el 30 de julio, se realizó una gran cirugía de 15 horas llamada Cirugía Citorreductora y HIPEC (Quimioterapia Intraperitoneal Hipertérmica). Lograron extirpar la mayoría de los órganos que estaban contaminados como ovarios, trompas, útero, bazo, 70% del colon/recto, apéndice y gran parte de tejido de la cavidad abdominal.
Patología hizo una biopsia de todo lo extraído y todavía había células cancerosas activas en el apéndice, los ovarios, el útero, el colon y el bazo. No pudieron eliminar todo, ya que hay algunas partes vitales y zonas que no se pueden eliminar, pero la esperanza es que la quimioterapia caliente mate las células restantes que son microscópicas y no se pueden ver a simple vista. La principal preocupación del oncólogo era que la pared abdominal aún tuviera células cancerosas activas, pero Dios es tan grande que todo ese tejido resultó Negativo para Malignidad y los órganos que aún tenían células activas fueron removidos.
El proceso de recuperación después de la cirugía fue bastante difícil, tuve que quedarme en el hospital por un mes, y luego en casa me tomó otros 2 meses poder comenzar a hacer las cosas por mí misma, no fue fácil porque tenía una ileostomía, que es una abertura en el abdomen para poder evacuar, ya que aproximadamente el 70% de mi colon / recto tuvieron que ser removidos. Esto hizo que el proceso de recuperación fuera más lento y difícil porque mi esposo tenía que reemplazar la bolsa cada 3 días.
A casi tres meses de la cirugía se realizaron radiografías y se pudo verificar que no había ninguna fuga internamente y que todas las conexiones realizadas durante la cirugía sanaron adecuadamente y llegó el momento de hacer la Reversión de Ileostomía y este procedimiento se realizó el 22 de octubre. Como habían pasado casi tres meses, me hicieron una tomografía computarizada para verificar si había algo creciendo nuevamente y, gloria a Dios, todo se veía muy bien.
Hoy estoy en remisión, y hace dos semanas me hicieron mi segunda tomografía computarizada que se hará cada tres meses, y el oncólogo está muy contento con los resultados, todo se ve limpio y mi recuperación va bien, y le agradezco a Dios con todo mi corazón por esto.
Les cuento todo esto porque no pude trabajar y quien me cuidaba era mi esposo, y él tuvo que pausar su trabajo por aproximadamente 5 meses en total, así que tuvo que estar todo el tiempo conmigo.
Ya todo esto gracias a Dios pasó, sin embargo, para nadie es un secreto lo que significa dejar de trabajar más de un año por mi parte y por la de él varios meses, los gastos mensuales no pararon, pero nuestras fuerzas y enfoque estaban dedicadas a sanar.

Hi, I'm Iliana and this is my story.
On December 26, 2023, I was diagnosed with cancer. At first, due to multiple symptoms including pain in the abdominal area and lower back, I went to the emergency room and had the CT scan done. A few hours later, the doctor came in and said he saw some abnormalities in the ovaries that could be cancer. After a diagnostic laparoscopy to obtain samples and images and the biopsy, they concluded that it started in the appendix, which is very rare, and had metastasized to the ovaries, uterus, colon, rectum, intestines, spleen, and peritoneal cavity. It was called appendiceal adenocarcinoma.
The appendix did not have a tumor, but a cancerous substance called Mucin developed inside the walls and soon began to spread contaminating everything else, and when I started to feel the symptoms, it was already too widespread and was considered stage 4 cancer.
In January and February 2024, my husband took me to the emergency room because my belly was filling with a fluid called Ascites, one of the symptoms of the disease, and they were going to do a procedure called Paracentesis to remove the fluid accumulated in the abdominal cavity. The amount of fluid drained started with 800 ml, then three weeks later it was 2.70 liters, then 3.05 liters the following week and five days later it was 3.45 liters.
In February, chemotherapy began, and in a week the fluid began to be less, it dropped to 2.20 liters and the same the following week. The chemotherapy sessions were eight in total and were done every two weeks and in each session I had a pump with one of the chemotherapy drugs for 2 days and return to the infusion center to remove it.
The chemotherapy was being very effective since after the third infusion I no longer had fluid accumulation in the belly and the amount left was so small that it was not worth doing the drainage procedure anymore.
I finished the chemotherapy infusions on May 17, 2024.
On June 25, another diagnostic laparoscopic surgery was performed to take new images and new samples after the chemo treatment and to check how the disease had behaved, since the hope was that it would be neutralized and reduced as much as possible to extract all the contamination.
After the hospital tumor board discussed my case in detail, they decided that surgery was worth trying and on July 30th, a major 15 hour surgery called Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) was performed. They managed to remove most of the organs that were contaminated such as ovaries, tubes and uterus, spleen, 70% of the colon/rectum, appendix and much of the tissue in the abdominal cavity.
Pathology did a biopsy of everything removed and there were still active cancer cells in the appendix, ovaries, uterus, colon and spleen. They were not able to remove everything as there are some vital parts and areas that cannot be removed but the hope is that the hot chemotherapy will kill the remaining cells that are microscopic and cannot be seen with the naked eye. The oncologist's main concern was that the abdominal wall still had active cancer cells, but God is so great that all that tissue tested Negative for Malignancy and the organs that still had active cells were removed.
The recovery process after surgery was quite difficult, I had to stay in the hospital for a month, and then at home, it took me another 2 months to be able to start doing things for myself, it was not easy because I had an ileostomy, which is an opening in the abdomen to be able to have a bowel movement, as approximately 70% of my colon/rectum had to be removed. This made the recovery process slower and more difficult because my husband had to replace the bag every 3 days.
Almost three months after the surgery, x-rays were performed and it was possible to verify that there was no leak internally and that all the connections made during the surgery healed properly and it was time to do the Ileostomy Reversal and this procedure was performed on October 22nd. As it had been almost three months, they did a CT scan to check if there was anything growing again and, praise God, everything looked great.
Today I am in remission, and two weeks ago I had my second CT scan that will be done every three months, and the oncologist is very happy with the results, everything looks clear and my recovery is going well, and I thank God with all my heart for this.
I am telling you all this because I was unable to work and the one who took care of me was my husband, and he had to pause his work for approximately 5 months in total, so he had to be with me all the time.
All of this is now over, thank God, but it is no secret to anyone what it meant to stop working for more than a year on my part and for him for several months. The monthly expenses did not stop, but our strength and focus were dedicated to healing.
