From Italy to Space! Help me to study at NASA

Ciao a tutti,

sono Ilaria Fiore e qui voglio raccontarvi un pezzettino della mia storia che mi ha portato ad essere tra i 120 selezionati a livello internazionale per studiare a Houston, allo Johnson Space Center della NASA con l’International Space University .

Come per tanti ragazzi il mio percorso non è stato lineare, capire quella che fosse la mia strada è stato esso stesso un percorso tortuoso e per nulla facile, ho iniziato studiando Ingegneria Edile-Architettura presso il Politecnico di Milano e pian piano ho imparato ad alzare lo sguardo e a osservare gli alti palazzi di Milano, lasciandomi affascinare dalle geometrie, dalle finiture e dalle maestrie ingegneristiche.

Col tempo ho imparato che avrei dovuto guardare un po’ più in alto, a quel cielo stellato che osservavo d’estate con mio fratello e le mie sorelle sulla terrazza di casa mentre mi indicavano quale fosse la stella Polare e mi spiegavano cosa fosse la Via Lattea.

Con me portavo tutte le paure e le insicurezze di una ragazzina che dal suo paesello al centro del Gargano si era trasferita nella grande città per inseguire una carriera non troppo adatta per una ragazza, o almeno questo era quello che mi dicevano. Ho preservato quella decisione perché sapevo che stavo imparando tanto e che fosse la direzione giusta, però pian piano ho iniziato a sentire che mi mancasse un tassello.

Ho iniziato a sperimentare, a partecipare a tante attività extracurricolari che mi hanno portato a scoprire lo Space Architecture e all’inizio mi sembrava assurdo che potessi applicare le mie competenze al settore spaziale.

Ad oggi, a pochi esami dalla laurea, posso dire che di competenze tecniche e non solo ne ho acquisite tante e che il settore spaziale mi sta permettendo di metterle tutte in pratica.

Chiedere aiuto è difficile ma a volte è necessario. Il mio obiettivo è quello di terminare gli studi e di continuare a formarmi per poter contribuire allo sviluppo del settore spaziale nel nostro paese, che di eccellenze ne ha molte.

Poter partecipare al programma estivo dell’International Space University rappresenta un’importante opportunità formativa che mi permetterebbe di poter apprendere dai maggiori esperti del settore, in modo intensivo e puntuale.

L’ESA, l’Agenzia Spaziale Europea, mi supporterà con una borsa di studio di 10.000€ a copertura parziale del corso. Purtroppo non riesco autonomamente a coprire il resto della somma, soprattutto in tempi così brevi, in quanto il pagamento di altri 10.000€ è da effettuare entro il 31 Marzo, per questo chiedo il vostro aiuto e di far girare il link della raccolta fondi!

I am Ilaria Fiore and here I want to tell you a little part of my story that led me to be among the 120 selected internationally to study in Houston, at NASA's Johnson Space Center with International Space University.

As for many students my path was not linear, figuring out what my route was was itself a winding path and not at all easy, I started by studying Building and Architectural Engegneering at the Politecnico di Milano and gradually learned to look up and observe the high buildings of Milan, letting myself be fascinated by the geometries, details and engineering mastery.

Over time I learned that I should look a little higher, to that starry sky that I used to observe in the summer with my brother and sisters on the terrace at home as they pointed out what the North Star was and explained to me what the Milky Way was.

With me I carried all the fears and insecurities of a young girl who had moved from her small town in the center of Gargano to the big city to pursue a career not too suitable for a girl, or at least that was what I was told. I preserved that decision because I knew I was learning so much and that it was the right direction, however, I slowly began to feel that I was missing a piece.

I started experimenting, participating in many extracurricular activities that led me to discover Space Architecture, and at first it seemed insane that I could apply my skills to the space industry.

To date, a few exams away from graduation, I can say that I have acquired many technical and related skills, and the space sector is allowing me to put them all into practice.

Asking for help is difficult but sometimes necessary. My goal is to finish my studies and continue training so that I can contribute to the development of the space sector in our country, which has many excellences.

Being able to participate in the International Space University summer program is an important educational opportunity that would allow me to be able to learn from leading experts in the field in an intensive and timely way.

ESA, the European Space Agency, will support me with a 10,000€ scholarship to partially cover the course. Unfortunately, I cannot independently cover the rest of the amount, especially so quickly, as the payment of another 10,000€ is due by March 31, so I am asking for your help and to spread the fundraising link!
