When we got Lina we knew she was special. She sat quietly in her kennel in the bark-filled Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago, politely waiting to be adopted, with her big brown spot and dog grin. When she learned to play hide and seek we were impressed. When she started playing the piano we were floored (her tricks now include shutting the door and oh-so-gently nibbling socks off feet). Over the 6 years that we’ve owned her, she’s made us smile every single day.
If you know Lina, chances are you've also been on the receiving end of her warmth, intelligence, and playfulness.
On September 17, we headed into our vet's office to explore a persistent limp in her back leg. We were told maybe it was strain, maybe it was scar tissue, and then maybe even cancer. Over the course of several weeks, we discovered our Lina did in fact have cancer - a very hard-to-treat cancer.
Lina was diagnosed on October 2 with Hemangiosarcoma. Otherwise known as a vessel cancer, this aggressive cancer can travel and gather anywhere blood runs through the body.
Currently, Lina's cancer has manifested in her back right leg. On Tuesday, October 21, she'll head into the vet to have her leg amputated in hopes of controlling the cancer in her body. We're grieving for this precious friend and scared by the thought of losing her to hemangiosarcoma.
The medical team surrounding Lina has been diligent, kind, and informative—yet expensive. And that's why we're here. This is a financial hardship for us. We cannot cover these costs without help. Will you help us, and Lina?
We're here to raise $8,000. This money will help us cover the costs we've already incurred, the treatment on Tuesday, and the beginning stages of her recovery.
We've prepared some very special thank you gifts to those of you who are able to help us financially. Take note of the children's book especially. It's going to be amazing. Watch for updates!
These won't come your way immediately (we'll have a lot on our plates adjusting to this new phase of life), but we won't forget your kindness and support. Thank you in advance.
Much love and gratitude,
Dan, Stacia, and Lina
