About Ignacio
Ignacio is one of the most kindhearted, genuine people I (his girlfriend of four years) know. He was originally born in Guatemala, but has been living here the majority of his life, 27 years. He has been undocumented for the last couple years due to his green card expiring and the long, tedious, and expensive citizenship application process. He has been working full time, saving money for his citizenship costs and a car, up until the accident, and is now out of work and requiring care for a minimum of six weeks.
What Happened
On July 29, 2023, Ignacio was biking to work when he went into cardiac arrest and collapsed. A Good Samaritan nearby who saw gave him CPR and called 911. An ambulance rushed him to the neared cardiac emergency center. Because his heart stopped, the paramedics used a defibrillator to re-start his heart.
In the ICU, Ignacio was put under a medical coma, and I (his girlfriend of four years) was able to see him. After two days the hospital was able to bring Iggy out of his coma and he began the process of figuring out why he collapsed.
The doctors and nurses caring for Ignacio determined that he had a mass on his heart which caused the arrhythmia (cardiac arrest) and it was critical to remove it, otherwise this would happen again.
On August 9, Ignacio had open heart surgery to remove the mass and is now in recovery. His surgeon has informed us he will not be able to work for a minimum of six weeks and will need care while he recovers.
Any financial help Ignacio receives from this fundraiser will go towards his medical expenses, which are significant, and to his care and recovery.
I (his girlfriend) have not been able to work for two weeks during this time, as well as his mother, who has flown in from Atlanta, Georgia and has had to miss work for two weeks as well. We are his primary caregivers right now and any assistance is extremely appreciated. All funds raised are going directly to his bank account.
We are currently in the process of:
- Applying for MediCal and emergency MediCal
- Applying for disability insurance
- Applying for financial assistance for caregivers (for Ignacio's mother)
- Sorting out Ignacio's immigration status, which is making the process of applying for financial aid significantly more difficult
We are exhausting all financial aid application we are able to, but due to Ignacio's undocumented immigration status, and due to the slow nature of government aid, we are requesting financial help.
We are unbelievably grateful for any support we receive and for the enormous outpouring of love and support we have received already from friends, family, all the incredible hospital staff, and strangers.
