Wie zijn we?
Wij zijn een groep van master- en doctoraatsstudenten aan de universiteit van Gent en dit jaar nemen wij deel aan de iGEM competitie. iGEM is een internationaal vermaarde competitie in synthetische biologie waarin teams van over de hele wereld een eigen project uitwerken. Zonder COVID-19 kwamen alle groepen samen in BOSTON, MA, om hun project voor te stellen aan de wereld tijdens de Giant Jamboree. Met COVID-19 is dit uiteraard niet mogelijk en gaan we de projecten voorstellen door middel van een online Giant Jamboree.
Wat willen we doen?
De WHO schat dat wereldwijd meer dan 300 miljoen mensen aan depressie lijden en het is de meest voorkomende psychische stoornis. Huidige behandelingen van depressie werken via medicijnen waarvan de werking niet goed begrepen is en die ongewenste bijwerkingen hebben. Nieuwe studies hebben aangetoond dat problemen met het darmmicrobioom depressie- en angst gerelateerde stoornissen in de hand kunnen werken. Daarom hadden wij het idee om in te werken op het darm microbioom, aanvullend op bestaande behandelingen.
Hoe willen we dit doen?
Bubbly is een uniek nieuw concept dat het darmmicrobioom gaat beïnvloeden en bestaat uit drie supplementen toegevoegd aan een eetbare parel. Het eerste supplement is naringenine en draagt de kracht van planten naar je darmen. Daarnaast werkt het ook ontstekingsremmend. Het tweede supplement is kojibiose, dit heeft een prebiotische werking en dient als voedingsstof voor de goeie darmbacteriën. Als laatste wordt vitamine B12 toegevoegd; ook vitamine B12 zal bijdragen tot de goede darmbacteriën en is daarnaast een essentiële vitamine. De parel is gemaakt voor dagelijks gebruik als onafhankelijk product maar kan ook toegevoegd worden aan al bestaande producten.
Waarom hebben we uw hulp nodig?
Deelnemen aan de iGEM competitie kost geld. Enkel om deel te nemen moet al een bedrag van $5,000 USD neergeteld worden. En uiteraard willen ook graag ons project voorstellen op de Jamboree in Boston. Helaas hangt ook daar een prijskaartje aan vast. Er is een vaste kost van $695 USD per persoon om deel te nemen aan de jamboree.
Waarom doneren?
De iGEM competitie is een zeer prestigieuze en internationaal vermaarde competitie. Hieraan deelnemen zou een unieke en enorm verrijkende ervaring zijn. Met uw hulp, kunnen we hopelijk ons project voor stellen aan de wereld! Als u doneert krijgt u ook nog eens een uniek gadget, dus waar wacht u nog op? Zelfs als u niet kunt te doneren, kunt u ons helpen door ons project te delen met vrienden en familie, zodat we meer mensen kunnen bereiken!
Afhankelijk van uw donatiebedrag krijgt u: enkele door ons goedgekeurde kombucharecepten, exclusieve deelname aan een info- en Q&A-sessie over het vervolg van ons project en/of een uitnodiging tot ons smaakpanel!

Who are we?
We are a group of master- and PhD-students of the University of Ghent and this year we will partake in the international iGEM competition. iGEM is an internationally renowned competition in synthetic biology. All the teams, from all over the world, work on a project involving synthetic biology. Without COVID-19, all groups come together in Boston by the end of October to present their project to each other and to the world at the Giant Jamboree. Due to COVID-19, we will instead participate in an online meeting which will take place mid-November.
What do we want to do?
The WHO estimates that more than 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression. It is also the world's leading cause of disability. Current treatments of depression-related disorders work via drugs that have side-effects and are not well-understood. Furthermore, recent findings indicate that problems in the gut microbiome trigger depression and anxiety-related disorders. Hence, we came up with the idea of influencing the gut microbiome as an alternative treatment in combination with contacting a therapist.
How do we want to do this?
Bubbly is a unique novel food that is filled with supplements to influence the gut microbiome. In short, there are three supplements present in our edible pearl. The first one is naringenin, and it brings the power of plants to your gut and works as an anti-inflammatory agent. The second one is Kojibiose; it is a prebiotic sugar that only feeds those bacteria that are important. The third is vitamin B12; it helps to sustain those bacteria that are important, and it is an essential vitamin. Now about the pearl, it could be sold as an independent product, but it could also be combined with existing food. The pearls are to be taken daily as a supplement and can be combined with existing therapies.
Why do we need your help?
Taking part in the iGEM competition is not free. Just participating already requires a registration fee of $5,000 USD. Furthermore, it would mean a lot to us if we could present our project at the Giant Jamboree online. Here we could attract new connections for further concept development. However, the Jamboree requires an additional attendance fee of $695 USD per person.
Why donate?
The iGEM competition is prestigious and internationally renowned and participating would be an incredibly unique and enriching experience for all of us. With your help, we can continue developing our little Bubbly! And if you donate, you also get some unique gadgets! So, what are you waiting for?
