I met Owen Mahan through my client, Joe Minoso, who portrays Joe Cruz on Chicago Fire. Joe is the national spokesman for Shriners Hospital "Be Burn Aware" campaign and we were lucky enough to meet Owen a year and a half ago at an event at Blaze Pizza. He is an amazing little guy with an incredible spirit, a love for life is funny, mischievous and loves baseball!
Owen underwent his 48th surgery in his 9 years of life today to have his right leg amputated. He was scalded in a bathtub of water at the age of 2. His adoptive mother, Susan Mahan, has raised him since he was 3. He is in terrible pain and this is the only way to relieve it. Today, February 6th, the surgeons removed his right leg four inches below his knee. They took the skin and tissue from the leg and attached it to his groin, behind his left knee and his right hand where it is very tight and painful for him. Owen's left leg will be amputated in May. Both surgeries take place at the Shriners Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. He should be walking again by August and cannot wait to run and play with his foster brothers and friends. He is currently in a wheelchair and at home he walks on his knees.
Susan also has four other boys with special needs she fosters, ages 2 - 13.
While speaking with Susan today I found out they live in a three bedroom house; the garage was converted into Owen's bedroom as he could no longer climb the stairs to the bedroom or bathroom. Owen is carried to second floor to bathe.
I would like us to all come together and raise money for Susan Mahan and her family, especially Owen, so they can live in a comfortable setting. Susan, Owen and their family certainly deserves this! She has no idea I am doing this. Susan doesn't ask for things. I and others will ask what do the boys need or want, and she will tell us their favorite games or toys. I think we can all agree we don't want Owen living in a converted garage and it isn't ideal for Susan either, but she does the best she can. The boys have enough toys and games right now. Let's give them a beautiful home where Owen and his foster brothers can run around, have their privacy and Susan can have a haven of her own. Who is in? Let's let the world know, LOVE WINS! If Owen can, we can!
God bless Owen, Susan and all who care about them. Thank you!
