SYNOPSIS

SINOSSI

Early 2000's. On a beach in Eastern Sicily young MELA (8) observes her extended family group sunbathing. She gets confronted with their sexist mindset, becoming ever more aware of the great dissatisfaction present in the relationship between her mother and father. Her only solace is found in the friendship with a foreign boy, MILO (8). Though not speaking each other’s language, they play together beyond any gender stereotype, till Mela will find herself at a crossroads: follow on her mother’s footsteps or rebel.

Primi 2000. Su una spiaggia della Sicilia orientale, la piccola MELA (8) gioca mentre la famiglia prende il sole. Confrontandosi con le loro idee sessiste, diventa sempre più cosciente dell’insoddisfazione presente nel rapporto tra suo padre e sua madre, che prova a decifrare. Unico conforto è l'amicizia che instaura con un bambino straniero, MILO (8). Pur non parlando la stessa lingua, i due giocano insieme superando gli stereotipi di genere, finché Mela non viene posta davanti ad un bivio: seguire le orme della madre o ribellarsi.

Donate! Just like any other graduation film, my project is mostly self-funded. Magic realism and portraying the sensorial have been a big source of inspiration during my studies and I would love to implement them here as much as possible. All of the funds raised on this platform will go towards enhancing the visual aspect of the film, by means of extra equipment, more extravagant costumes and a great post production work.

Donando! Come ogni altro film di fine percorso accademico (nel mio caso, la laurea magistrale), il mio progetto è in gran parte autofinanziato. Il realismo magico è un genere che mi ha veramente ispirato durante i miei studi di regia in Belgio e mi piacerebbe implementarlo qui il più possibile. Tutti i fondi raccolti su questa piattaforma saranno interamente destinati a migliorare l'aspetto visivo del film, utilizzando attrezzature di qualità, costumi originali e mediante un grande lavoro di post produzione.

On a cinematographic level, I am oriented towards a more soft, analogue look, rendered by analogue lenses on a digital camera. About the use of color and light, I wish to retain the expressive power of black and white without resorting to it. Regarding the camera movement, I like to describe what I’m aiming at with a metaphor. Like the river is influenced by what’s beneath the surface, unpredictable and yet routed, so it’s the style of this film: bubbly, gentle, yet surprising, mixing fixed and hand held shots in a natural, flowing way.

A livello cinematografico, sono orientata verso un look morbido, analogico, reso da obiettivi analogici su una camera digitale. Per quanto riguarda l'uso del colore e della luce invece, desidero mantenere la forza espressiva del bianco e nero senza dovervi ricorrere. Il movimento di camera che ricerco mi piace descriverlo con la seguente metafora: come il fiume è influenzato da ciò che sta sotto la superficie, imprevedibile eppure contenuto all'interno di argini e creatore di percorsi, così voglio che la mia camera conceda momenti di staticità alternati a momenti di movimento. É lo stile di questo film: spumeggiante, delicato, sorprendente, che mescola riprese fisse e a mano libera in modo fluido.

MY APPROACH

NOTE DI REGIA

At the end of my academic path at the RITCS (Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound) in Brussels, preparing for my master short film thesis, I started thinking back on my past on an island that was my home, my confinement, my playground: Sicily. The sensory memories of childhood, combined with a reflection on the topic of sexism, are what prompted this project.

“RIVERBERO” wants to delve into the collective female challenge of blossoming into the fullness of one's identity, free from socio-cultural conditioning. It touches on themes such as consent and multiculturalism, encouraging new generations to move towards autonomy and a free mindset.

Language played an important role in my life. Both sound and silence, as well as the different languages and accents present in this movie, create an interesting cacophony that at times resembles meditation. The circularity of the story is accompanied by the use of the “in medias res” technique and abrupt editing cuts.

This film unfolds over the span of a single day, crossing three different phases of the protagonist’s life: past, present and a dreamy, surrealistic state. We mostly experience Mela’s point of view, yet we also get introduced to the different prospectives of other people in Mela’s life.

“RIVERBERO” is meant for a broad audience, consisting of women of all ages, men who wish to understand them and all travelers without roots looking for a place to belong to. It's a coming-of-age story where the transition to adulthood occurs as the protagonist decides to protect and learn from her inner child.

To make this short film I return to Sicily, to play like I used to but also to open up a dialogue, for the very first time, with this strong, mystical, energetic and at the same time disenchanted island of mine.

Alla fine del mio percorso accademico alla RITCS (Royal Institute for Theatre, Cinema and Sound) di Bruxelles, mentre preparavo la mia tesi di master, ho iniziato a ripensare al mio passato su un'isola che è stata la mia casa, il mio confine, il mio parco giochi: La Sicilia. I ricordi sensoriali dell'infanzia, uniti ad una riflessione sul tema del sessismo, sono ciò che ha dato vita a questo progetto.

"RIVERBERO" vuole approfondire la sfida collettiva femminile di sbocciare nella pienezza della propria identità, libere da condizionamenti socio-culturali. Tocca temi come il consenso e la multiculturalità, incoraggiando le nuove generazioni a muoversi verso l'autonomia ed una mentalità libera.

Il linguaggio ha avuto un ruolo importante nella mia vita. Sia il suono che il silenzio, così come le diverse lingue ed accenti presenti nel film, creano un'interessante cacofonia che a volte ricorda la meditazione. La circolarità della storia è accompagnata dall'uso della tecnica "in medias res" e da bruschi tagli in fase di montaggio.

Il film si svolge nell'arco di una sola giornata, attraversando tre diverse fasi della vita della protagonista: passato, presente ed uno stato onirico e surreale, una terra di mezzo.

Viviamo soprattutto il punto di vista di Mela ma veniamo comunque introdotti anche alle diverse prospettive di persone o gruppi significativi per il suo percorso di crescita.

"RIVERBERO" è destinato ad un pubblico ampio, composto da donne di tutte le età, uomini che desiderano comprenderle e tutti i viaggiatori senza radici alla ricerca o meno di un luogo a cui appartenere. È una storia di passaggio all'età adulta in cui la protagonista decide di proteggere ed imparare dalla sua bambina interiore.

Per realizzare questo cortometraggio torno in Sicilia, per giocare come facevo una volta ma anche per aprire un dialogo, forse per la prima volta, con questa mia isola forte, mistica, energica ed allo stesso tempo tremendamente disincantata.
