If you know John, you know he'd be there

Håfa Adai Family and Friends,

My name is Kiyoko and alongside me is my mom, Marcia. I am writing today to not only share my dad's story but to seek your support during this unexpected yet overwhelming time. For those who don't know my dad (John), he is an active, determined, kindhearted, and sociable individual who for many years has willingly put others before himself. Considering he's always been the first to lend a hand to anyone, I feel this is the best time for his deeds to be reciprocated back to him.

Within the last 5 years, my dad gradually became immobile. Fast forward to June of 2024, my dad's life has drastically changed in a manner no individual would often believe or desire. He was told by his neurologist at the Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC), "it is not a guarantee you will be able to walk again!" Hearing these words firsthand, not only for my dad but for my mom and I was definitely a hard pill to swallow. After hearing such devastating news, his neurologist performed a laminectomy (surgery to relieve pressure of the neck/spine). Though the surgery was looked upon as a positive outcome. Unfortunately, he continues to undergo medical issues such as muscle spasms (sudden and uncontrolled leg movements which result in sharp pain) and a neurogenic bladder (which requires a daily use of a foley catheter). Overall, he has Quadriparesis secondary to severe spinalstenosis (weakness in the limbs caused by the narrowing of the spinal canal).

Considering all the medical attention my dad received at GRMC, he is currently receiving home care services which require bi-weekly nurse and monthly doctor visits. In the event he is required to seek outpatient services, he would need to be transported via medical transport (private ambulance) since it is difficult for my mom and I to transport him through our personal vehicles. Unfortunately, all these services are not fully covered with his insurance and he was declined for public assistance (medicaid) to include social security disability which brings such burden.

We are humbly seeking support to help cover the costs of his hospitalization (June 2024), ongoing homecare and medical treatment, medications, and other essential supplies for his care. On behalf of my dad, mom and I, we would like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support, love, and prayers during this journey. Everything you all do for us will never go unnoticed and is deeply appreciated.

With love and heartfelt gratitude,
Kiyoko N. Afaisen ♥️
