"Be strong and courageous. He will not leave you or forsake you." ~ Deuteronomy 31:6
This GoFundMe page was created to benefit my brother, Scot Tomaras. If you know my brother, he is passionate about music. He is an avid drummer and has been stickin' & kickin' for decades. The joy of drumming and playing music has come to a screeching halt. He is no longer able to enjoy a normal life, do the laundry, mow the lawn, or growing vegetables.
In 2024, he began to be short of breath after some physical exertion. The shortness of breath began to happen more often. Wanting to rule out cardio issues, he saw his physician, and the investigation began. He was sent to be worked up by cardiology, rheumatology, and pulmonology.
After much testing, Scot was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). This rare and insidious disease causes scarring and stiffening in his lungs. The scarring of the alveoli inhibits the ability to obtain proper oxygen intake. There is no cure. There is only one life-saving treatment: Double Lung Transplant. This is a fast moving disease.
Scot has become totally dependent on oxygen since January 2025. His lungs are currently working at less than 50%. He was referred to Northwestern Medicine Pulmonary Lung Transplant Center in Chicago. He is currently working to get on the UNOS Transplant list for lungs so he can live his life again. He will be going for pre-transplant testing in the next few weeks and will be added to the list of people looking for new lungs.
We are looking to raise money to offset medical expense incurred by this process. Scot can no longer work. In the first year alone, post-transplant medications will exceed $5K, let alone the weekly trips to Northwestern Med in Chicago. As caregivers, some of us may need to relocate to Chicago to support him in recovery. This is going to be a long road and recovery ahead. We need any help we can to ease the cost of care burden during this process.
How You Can Help:
• Donate – Every dollar brings us closer to giving Scot a second chance at life.
• Share – Please share this campaign with your network to help us reach more kind-hearted people.
Funds will be used to offset medical expenses, pharmaceuticals, pulmonary rehabilitation services, medical transport to and from appointment when we cannot get him there ourselves, and housing while in Chicago.
Since this disease is so rare, I thought it would be a good idea to share some information about IPF. To learn more about IPF, please follow this link to the American Lung Association:
If nothing else, please pray for him, our family, and the fabulous medical and clinical staff that will be helping him through this process.
Thank you... from the bottom of our hearts!
