Arabic is the fifth most spoken language in the world. But did you know that only 0.6% of the internet is in Arabic? Lack of access to content in their own language isolates Arabic-speaking youth. Often content that is accessible in Arabic is heavily controlled, with few or no outlets where freedom of thought is celebrated and encouraged.
Ideas Beyond Borders is igniting a movement for a positive change across the Middle East and North Africa.
We’re empowering youth to seek knowledge, think critically, and transcend the barriers to education and freedom that hold them back. These youth are our translators, our readers, and our hope for a better future.
They’re transforming their own region by making knowledge and freedom of thought accessible for all on our digital, accessible platforms - regardless of religion, creed, or gender.
In the face of considerable adversity and threats from authoritarian regimes and extremists, our translators are proud to be challenging the status quo and helping MENA youth to form their own voices and identities by exploring diverse ideas. Despite the crushing human rights abuses and suppression of free speech plaguing the region, they've worked with us to translate topics such as the civil rights movement , mental and reproductive health, women's rights, and more.
Their translated words have inspired thousands across the region, and our Arabic Facebook page grows by almost 1,000 followers a day! To date, we have over 60,000 fans and readers from all over the Arabic-speaking world, and we’ve certified and empowered over 20 translators.
Ideas Beyond Borders was founded by an Iraqi refugee, Faisal Saeed Al Mutar, who endured years of civil war, the murder of his brother, and several kidnapping attempts for thinking differently and speaking out against extremism. He wanted to make ideas about equality, freedom of speech, and civil rights accessible to youth like him. You can watch his story here . Faisal turned his big dreams into a ground-breaking organization that has now translated a landmark 750,000 words into Arabic and created an energetic, youthful team of incredible translators.
