Ida Mae's story began before she was born. Ida Mae's mom was in labor and delivered two kittens without incident then the foster noticed that during the delivery of the last two kittens (Ida Mae and her sibling), the umbilical cord had wrapped tightly around their paws. That's when the foster reached out to us and one of our volunteers rushed mom and all her newborns to the vet hospital, where they were able to remove the tangled umbilical cord from both kittens. Ida Mae's sibling's paw came through just fine, but sadly, Ida Mae's back paw had gone too long without blood flow, and it died off. At first, our vet recommended waiting until she was bigger before deciding whether she would need to lose the rest of that hurt leg. But as Ida Mae grew, her foster noticed that whenever she ran and played, her back leg would drag along the floor, and she kept getting sores on her little nub.
We took her to a specialist, who recommended removing the rest of the leg. If she keeps dragging it, she will face issues for the rest of her life and remain open to infection. The good news is that Ida Mae is a cute, happy, energetic kitten who doesn't even realize she's missing a paw. We are hopeful that once her leg is gone, she will be just as active and won't miss the entire leg missing. She has already overcome so much in her short life, and with your help, she can finally be free of pain.
