Von and I were originally going to be married on June 27th, 2020, but like so many couples, Covid-19 has disrupted our plans.
While our wedding has been postponed to 2021, we're mobilizing our original wedding date to raise needed funding for organizations doing excellent work in moving civil rights forward in America, at this watershed moment in history.
June 27th this year is the 51st anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, which kicked off the movement for LGBTQ rights in America--and we are deeply aware that we owe a debt to decades of activism that have made our marriage possible in this country. In particular, trans POC activists Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera are among the pioneering organizers who led us to this moment.
Across the country, people are scrutinizing racist practices in policing and the manifestations of racism embedded in all aspects of our society. This struggle to end racism is deeply connected to LGBTQ liberation.
This Pride month, we stand with activists saying: “No Pride for some of us without Liberation for all of us.” (Micah Bazant) We will be marching in the Queer Liberation March in NYC on June 28th, and we invite you to show your support with a donation here. This funding will be split evenly among two organizations we love, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, which both work to end systemic injustice for people of color and queer/ trans/ gender non-conforming people.
We are kicking off the fundraiser with $200 of our own.
100% of funds raised will be donated to these two charities, after transaction fees automatically deducted by the GoFundMe platform (apx. 3.4%).
