My nephew is an amazing ICU nurse who put himself through college and nursing school. Training in a level one hospital and dedicated to the medical profession, he was ecstatic when he moved back to Boston and began working in a Boston hospital. Then COVID happened. The trauma began when there wasn’t enough PPE and it felt like each shift was a death sentence. Then the patients overloaded the hospitals and every shift had patients dying in great numbers. Over the summer when the numbers lightened, the pain of those months hit causing flashbacks, nightmares and severe depression. The numbers are back up and when my nephew is able to drag himself into work he is re-traumatized by every death. He is seeking a new line of work, but the severe PTSD makes job hunting difficult. After a hospitalization, he reduced his work load, but cannot afford his rent or groceries. I have reached out for help, but there is little to none for healthcare workers on the frontlines. I fear for his ability to get through this period in his life. I am hopeful those of you who understand what COVID has done to those trying help others will lend a hand to this amazing young man who just wanted to help people.
