Life in outer space is a challenge, to say the least. The most mundane tasks that are performed so easily on Earth need to be carried out with extreme care and consideration of the significantly different environmental conditions found beyond planet Earth.
ICEE.Space is focused on developing the technology necessary to make life beyond Earth possible, which includes robotics, habitats, spacesuit design and human performance. Our first mission in 2021, served as a proof of concept, with astronauts successfully setting up an inflatable habitat in less than 8 hours.
Our second mission, CHILL-ICE II, taking place in August 2022, will build on the success and lessons learned from CHILL-ICE I with an increased number of major scientific objectives with the primary focus being geology, technological innovations, and infrastructure development.
We will be studying the physiological and psychological effects of extreme environments on the human body and mind, the suitability and points of concern in space suits for long durations and how these can be alleviated with AR/VR and other technological improvements. The geological research aspect will focus on mapping the lava-tubes, understanding their formation and how its resources can be used with the aid of rovers. Finally, to assess the habitability of lava tubes, research will be conducted to determine the necessary characteristics for the habitat like airtightness, pressurization, power supply, etc.
