Hi, my name is Robin, at the start of march, my partner and I moved in together, and unfortunately a month later, she got into a collision when borrowing my car to make a trip to her mom’s house in a neighboring city to grab more things from her old room and help tidy. She made a mistake judging the distance between her and the rear end of a trailer and unfortunately my car suffered some front end damage, but was still in fine operational condition to the point that the tow driver started it up and re-positioned it so that it could be towed properly. The trailer that was struck suffered such minor damage that the drivers pulled into a nearby parking lot, bent it out with a crowbar, and drove off, being gone before I even got to the crash site. Stupidly, I let them tow it away to a yard, where ICBC took a look at the perfectly running vehicle with body damage and subsequently declared it salvage. Then they decided to buy out my car at vastly under what it was worth (a 1990 corolla with 100k kilometers on the engine and minor front end damage) at $1800. And now due to the most ghoulishly evil loophole, ICBC now expects a sum of $4,474 to be paid to them because that is the amount of money they COULDVE charged me for a policy with my partner listed on it, despite people who dont live in your household getting an allowance of 12 uses of your vehicle without being listed. The moment they live with you, this rule does not apply, even if you had JUST moved into the same dwelling some weeks prior. They did not tell me about this, I specifically asked when the collision happened, if I would get a charge for not having her on my insurance, to which every adjustor, every phone call, every ICBC related agent told me that I would not incur this charge. Yesterday I found the charge in the mail, no email correspondence despite me making sure they have my updated email, only a letter that arrived yesterday and a payment date that comes in less than a month or else interest starts to pile on top. I had bought an entirely new car between then and now, as well as booked things for myself because I was of the belief that I had the money to spare. Now I look at a payment date with nowhere near the required amount available, and feel like a complete moron for spending anything on myself rather than solving this. Similarly, my partner does not have anywhere near enough money to be able to pay this as she is on disability, and also had made a big purchase for herself recently. I do not like asking for help like this, I had one single dollar to my name in January and I clawed my way back from that on my own, but I am afraid I wont be able to this time, and so have come seeking help. Even if all you can do is share this, it is appreciated, from the bottom of my heart, thank you <3
