Dear friends, family, and acquaintances… Most of you are not aware that my brother and I will be traveling to Beirut, Lebanon the first week of January 2016 to assist at the refugee camp of Shatila. A camp that primarily consisted of Palestinian refugees and has since swelled to include many Syrian refugees as well (estimated population between 10k-22k). Part of the trip will be guided by a Lebanese American GW student of Palestinian descent whose family resides in Lebanon and who volunteers at the camps during his breaks.
Our mission will include bringing sunglasses for all age groups, reading glasses for those 40+ years of age, and dental hygiene products. I will also be bringing my optometric equipment to provide very basic eye exams to those in dire need and will be sending back prescription glasses for extreme cases.
Once there, our goal is to assess the situation and determine what is needed. We plan to purchase goods locally in an effort to support small businesses and relieve any strains that may be a result of the stress the crisis has had on the community and country as a whole.
We have also reached out to organizations on the ground to facilitate a more effective way to spend our time and resources.
For me, this trip is not only a response to the images and stories coming out of Europe and the Middle East, but also a reaction to the selfless, compassionate souls who I am privileged to call my friends and who have preceded me in volunteering their time. Rasha Hatab (Greece, Turkey), Aya Arkadan (Greece), Joann Canosa (Greece and Balkan Route), Waheeda Abbassi (Greece).
We would love for anyone interested in joining this #CascadeOfKindness to please contact me. Travel expenses will be each individual’s personal responsibility.
If you know me, and trust me, and can spare a few dollars, I appreciate it.
If you know me, and trust me, and are unable to contribute financially, I appreciate you spreading the word to your friends, family, and colleagues.
Wishing you all many blessings this holiday season. #OneLove #Unity #Compassion #Knowledge #Refugees #CascadeOfKindness #PayItForward #OnePersonCanMakeADifference #OncePersonCan
