The Dignity Project

My name is Stephanie Capper and I’m a journalist & human rights campaigner seeking urgent financial assistance as Funding Campaign Manager on behalf of the International Blue Crescent (IBC).  The IBC is committed to providing emergency & sustainable humanitarian aid in 14 countries across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Currently highly-active in Turkey and Syria, the IBC holds serious concerns that thousands of displaced Syrian refugee families are at risk of further humanitarian disaster in the form of contagious disease due to impoverished living conditions. In response, the IBC’s latest project commits to distributing kits containing health essentials to refugee families under severe financial stress.

And this project desperately needs funding.

UNDERSTANDING THE SITUATION
The ongoing conflict in Syria has inflicted immense harm amongst its citizens, causing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis resulting in massive numbers of innocent people and children fleeing the country. Most refugees fled their homes hastily, without having adequate time or finances to manage a transition into life outside Syria. Consequently, hundreds of thousands of displaced Syrians now reside in southeastern Turkey without the financial capacity to live in dignified, healthy conditions. Despite fleeing the violence, their health and living conditions are now as much of a threat as bombs and bullets. Unfortunately, inflation and the high cost of living is rapidly depleting savings, forcing families to prioritise essential expenses – food and fresh water are being prioritised over necessities like soap, sanitary items, diapers and washing power which are essential for good health. The IBC holds significant fears that the unhygienic environments displaced families live in will cause another humanitarian disaster in the form of deadly contagious disease.

THE PROJECT
This project is committed to creating healthy living conditions for thousands of displaced Syrian families and preventing the outbreak of deadly diseases such as typhoid, dysentery and diarrhea by distributing free hygiene kits to those most in need. These kits consist of simple items we take for granted such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, washing powder, soap, shampoo, and importantly, baby diapers and sanitary products, will ease financial pressures for Syrian refugee families. Most importantly, as there is very limited access to menstrual items and baby diapers in these areas, women and children are in desperate need of these kits.

The project will initially run for two (2) months and assist a minimum of 1,500 Syrian families in Gaziantep, Kilis and surrounding areas. Regular funding would provide the project with the sustainability to continue assisting thousands more conflict-affected people.

WHY DO I CARE?

This IBC and its cause are of particular importance to me and I feel a personal connection to the refugee community it serves in southeastern Turkey.

In 2013 I produced a short documentary film for Actuality Media and wrote feature articles for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on the IBC’s pscho-social initiatives with child refugees in Kilis. This provided me with the opportunity to see firsthand the living and psycho-social conditions Syrians face having escaped the civil war. I met elderly matriarchs in charge of a dozen children who had lost every male family member in the war. I got to know children who saw their families blown up infront of them, become orphaned due to ‘disappearances’ or see loved ones shot dead by snipers before their very eyes. I saw depressing and totally inadequate living conditions. I saw unending, unimaginable trauma.

What I also saw, however, were broken communities rebuilding in a foreign land, battling prejudice, language barriers, fear and poverty. I saw Syrians – skilled workers, mothers, fathers, teenagers and volunteers – build schools, hospitals, camps, and child safety centres created to nurture tormented children. While I encountered tremendous tragedy, I also witnessed determination, strength and fierce hope – these are incredible people who deserve a chance to live a happy, healthy life in dignity.

To express my solidarity with this project, in addition to my remote contribution as funding campaign manager I will travel to Turkey to personally participate in the distribution of the hygiene kits. This trip will be entirely self-funded. During this time, I will also seek to spend time with recipients of the kits, witness their living conditions and conduct interviews with families in order to document local response to the project.

I feel that this is the very least we can do to contribute some good to one of the worst humanitarian disasters the world has ever seen.

Please help. This project is close to my heart, and I hope that you’re interested in contributing to a cause that will improve the lives of thousands of people in need. We can do our bit to assist one of the worst humanitarian disasters the world has ever seen.

Pleas don't hesitate to contact me for more details about the project or further information about the IBC. Thank you so much for your time.

Kind regards,
