Ian's Standing Chair fund
Hi, I'm Ian. I'm a 44 year old paraplegic (limited use of my legs, full use of my arms) who uses a manual wheelchair. The problem is, sitting for long periods of time is known to be seriously unhealthy.
When I was younger, I used to regularly use "standing frames" to help lessen the impact of muscle contractures, aid digestion, and to help maintain bloodflow in my legs. After elementary school, my physical therapy stopped, and with it, I stopped having access to a standing frame. I've been relegated to asking family members (at home) and occasionally strangers (in public) for help reaching things over my head ever since. ...And I'd like the freedom of reaching into an overhead cabinet for a plate for my own dinner.
Cue the video below. The Tek RMD system would both maintain my mobility and increase my independence. If I'm in my wheelchair I can't reach the top of a bookshelf. Obviously I can't expect my parents (or other family members) to reach for things for the rest of our lives.
With the Tek RMD, I'd finally be able to do it myself...and I can move around in it!
Insurance wouldn't consider it; they suggested that more physical therapy would achieve the same ends.
The Tek RMD would finally ease that burden - and I'd be even more independent. It's a lofty goal, I know, but I believe that I can ... reach it ... with your help. (A little humor. I couldn't resist.)
I hope you'll consider helping me out!
Thank you very much!
