Ironically May is Mental Health Awareness month, and June is ALS Awareness month. These definitely go together, aside from their calendar order.

Many of use were quick and generous to contribute to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, without much information on this fatal disease, and certainly without a face or personal story we could associate with. We knew it was bad, and this was a great way to support it.
This disease now has a face for myself and my family. It belongs to my thoughtful and caring cousin and friend, Ian Dubek.
In an unknown amount of time, Ian will be unable to perform the most basic tasks that each of us take for granted everyday. This will be a huge challenge for him and his family and they must begin planning for this. There is and will continue to be high costs of travel for medical appointments and in the near future, equipment to help support Ian's mobility as well as any type of modifications they may need to make accommodate wheelchair etc.
I know the world is full of good and generous people. We saw it with the ice bucket challenge, and I am currently witnessing it everyday here in Alberta right now. I have to ask of family and friends, from all over, if anyone has just a little to spare in support of Ian in his heroic battle with ALS.
In thoughts and prayers, offering a hand or kind word to him and his family, and certainly by any monetary contributions to his continuing care.
The social media trend raised record amounts of money for something that some of us did not know a lot about, I know I didn't. But this is the most direct way to help someone currently living with ALS.
