Ian Krenik's senior year should have been full of new exciting experiences, having a job, playing football and golfing, going out with friends, taking PSEO classes at Bethany Lutheran College. Instead, at the end of his junior year, he started having a lot of abdominal pain and seemed to be running a constant fever.
First, they thought it may be IBS but no medication seemed to help. One night he was in so much pain they rushed him to the doctor thinking it was his appendix. He was sent home with more IBS medication only to end back in the hospital the next night. It was then that the diagnosis was made. Ian had a chronic illness called Crohn's Disease.
Ian has not had an easy time of it. Every time it seemed to be getting under control something else would flare up. Since June, he has been in and out of the hospital 20 different times with 7 of them being extended stays. He has had infusions, blood tests, Radiology tests (CT, MRI, and ultrasound). He was put on many different types of medications from steroids, antibiotics, biologics to pain relievers. This past October, surgeons end up having to take out part of his intestines due to a blockage and inflammation from an infection.
After the surgery things seemed to be going better. his face was no longer swollen and blotchy from the medication. He had more energy. But now he had a stoma with a colostomy bag that he needed to wear for three months to allow time for his intestines to heal.
How fun is that? A colostomy bag as a senior. How cool to hang around friends, especially when it needed to be changed:(
So he ended up staying home a lot and not participating in school activities.
When it was time to close up the stoma, everything went well, but when it was time to check out of the hospital, Ian was having trouble swallowing. There was a large lump on his thyroid and another smaller one on the other side. This lead to another surgery to remove the large cyst, which now leaves him with half of his thyroid. If the other cyst grows he will need to have the remaining portion of his thyroid removed. They are now waiting to find out what might have caused the cysts.
Ian has always been a smart, compassionate, reliable person. He doesn't want anyone to know how much pain and emotional suffering this has had on him and his family. I know Ian is a very deserving, generous person who just needs to have something good to look forward to instead of always worrying about what else might happen.
I hope by setting up this GoFund Me account it can help alleviate some of the undue stress on Ian and his family.
