Hello friends, family, co-workers, and supporters of Anne and Ian,

My name is Heather Barker, and I work with Ian's wife Anne.

On Christmas night, Anne and Ian received very unexpected news. The following is a post that Anne shared on Facebook with friends and family (and gave me permission to share with you):

"As some of you may be aware, Ian has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer that has metastasized to his brain and elsewhere. We've been told it's treatable, but not curable. Beyond that, we still don't know much. We're waiting to hear back on some results before our complete treatment plan is set.

We are working with a wonderful team from MN Oncology and M Health Fairview to fight this thing as best we can and for as long as we can.

This came upon us very suddenly, very unexpectedly. He was fine at Thanksgiving, and by Christmas night we had to go to the emergency room. We're both still quite shell-shocked and are trying to fully process what is happening.

The one bright spot is that we still have each other. We've been together for a million years, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Ian is the best, strongest, smartest, funniest man I've ever met. And he makes me a better me. Together, we will fight this thing as long and as hard as we possibly can."

Anne is the perfect person to be at Ian's side through this fight. In an early message to friends and family, Ian included, “Thankfully I have the love of my life Anne here to help me through this. She is my rock, my pillar, my strength. Not sure where I’d be without her, but I’m so grateful that I don’t have to know.” If you know Anne, you know how big her heart is. She has this innate ability to make instant and lasting connections with people. You learn quickly that she is the type of person that will drop everything to help anyone.

Since sharing the news of Ian's diagnosis with Anne's coworkers, I received several messages asking what people could do to help. While Anne and Ian are very good at helping others, they are not the type to ask for help, even in a time like this, which is why they are not - I am. To provide those that are able and want to help with an opportunity to do so, I have set up this GoFundMe account, which will go directly to them, to help with the financial part of this battle - medical bills, ancillary costs associated with Ian's diagnoses, and loss of income during any unpaid time away from work to provide care.

In addition to being able to help with expenses, donations will be used to give Anne and Ian the gift of time together, without the constant strain of worrying about money. Ian's doctor has made it clear that his cancer can be treated, but there is no cure. The goal is to shrink the cancer, extend the time Ian has left, and ensure he is as comfortable as possible throughout. Additional funds raised may be used to give Anne and Ian a long weekend away while Ian is able to enjoy it.

Please keep Anne and Ian in your thoughts and prayers. If you would like to donate a few dollars, know that your generosity is sincerely appreciated.
