Iain Smith was a regular at the Poimena Disc Golf Course since discovering the sport in 2014. Iain tragically passed away in July 2019. He leaves behind his wife and three children. His third child was born the day after his funeral. All money raised will go directly to Iain's family to assist them in this difficult time.
Members from Hobart Disc Golf are organising a disc golf tournament named the 'Iain Smith Memorial' to be held on 1 September 2019 at Poimena. The tournament is being held so the disc golf community can pay their respects to Iain.

It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of Poimena’s favourite sons, Iain Smith, passed away a few days ago after a short illness. Few people were aware of his failing health, such was the speed of the cancer. We are all deeply shocked and saddened.
Iain spent more hours than most at Poimena Reserve Disc Golf Course since discovering the sport in 2014. His natural talent and commitment to training and technique, soon saw his scores tumbling and his results rocketing upwards. In 2015 he won the MA1 division at the Australian Championships at Poimena, quite some achievement for such a short time in the game.
When you watched Iain play, you could tell he modelled his technique on his idol Paul McBeth, smooth and purposeful; when settling for a putt, he’d even massage the dirt with his foot, same as Paul. It worked for Iain.
Iain attended the League Day at Poimena on Sunday just gone. He was clearly in distress, but was determined to be there, to say hi, and to embrace his beloved Poimena. Maybe he knew it might be his last time.
He told us then that he had only months to live. He told us how much joy disc golf had given him, he told us of the great friends he had made through the sport, he told us how special Poimena was to him. It was deeply moving.
A memorial to Iain will be celebrated at Poimena in the coming months.
His funeral is this Wednesday, 17 July at Millingtons in Moonah, Tasmania.
Iain was a beautiful soul, quiet, unassuming, loyal and loving.
As we grieve, our thoughts are with his family; his two young children Lily and Connor, and his partner Maxine.
