Nick's Ironman Challenge

Donation protected
After much deliberation I have signed up to a half Ironman in the south of France on May 03rd. This is a huge challenge for me and as such I am looking to raise money for 2 amazing children’s charities.

The first is for a local little girl from Windsor called Maisy. We became aware of her story through a friend and Maisy's family. Maisy is suffering from Wilms tumour which is a type of kidney cancer and has spent most of this year undergoing relentless surgery and treatment at The Royal Marsden hospital. Her charity 'Go Crazy for Maisy' is raising funds to reach her dream to go to Euro Disney once her treatment is finished and any remaining funds to the Royal Marsden.

Our other choice is the Ronald McDonald charity - the Camberwell house is run by our good friend of ours and her house provides free accommodation for families with seriously ill children. Their facility enables the families to stay on site next to the hospital for the time they need for their child to get well.

When I hear about stories like these I count myself so lucky and its now time for me to do my bit to help make life a little bit easier for some other people.

So why sponsor me? Well this time 10 months ago I couldn’t even run 5km without stopping and puffing violently on my asthma inhaler, I didn’t own a bike and it’s fair to say exercise, apart from the odd game of squash or golf (yes that’s exercise too), wasn’t really my thing. So the thought of completing an endurance event would never have entered my mind, it was just something other people did. However, with a lot of training and determination I’ve now signed up to a half Ironman but don’t be fooled by the half, it’s a 70.3 mile race (113km), nearly 3 marathons, combing three disciplines designed to cohesively work together to break you and will take about 8 hours to complete – that’s double that of a very good marathon time.

If you’re unfamiliar with the format, the idea is simple – a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and a 21km half marathon run. All completed in one day; back to back with no break. The particular twists with this event are the high temperatures, a 1,200m bike climb up a mountain and spanning across 8 towns along with the small matter of a half marathon through cobbled streets and a forest! So I’ve got 5 months left to get myself in shape to complete it.

The charities I’m raising money for are inspiring and humbling. To complete an endurance race it takes discipline, patience and often an ability to endure pain and fatigue long beyond what most would consider ‘normal’ but its nothing compared what these families have to go through. So please, if you can spare a few quid dig deep to support these families and I’ll do my bit out in France...
