Mike's Fight for Life

In August 2012 at the age of 44, Mike Harmon was diagnosed with terminal stage IV colon cancer. The cancer metastasized to his liver and one lung which made the treatment difficult. Doctors didn’t expect Mike to live past Thanksgiving, which was less than 100 days away.
Mike started on very aggressive chemotherapy, and in February of 2013 he had surgery to remove about 12” of his colon. There was still one small spot on his liver, prompting doctors to perform microwave ablation in September of 2013. Following Mike’s ablation, just one tiny lesion remained.
In July 2014 we learned that the cancer in Mike’s liver had spread—there were now four tumors—and he started chemo again. He underwent 20 treatments in one year. In 2015 we traveled to Santa Clara for a Special Radiation called Y190 which is surgical administer into the liver. The specialist said this was Mike’s silver bullet, it ended up not being as successful as we hoped so Mike was then placed on an oral chemo pill.
In April of 2016 Mike ended up in the hospital as his liver was bleeding, which is one of the side effects of the Chemo pill. He was advised to stop the chemotherapy and was sent home on heavy pain medication until he was able to return to work 3 weeks later. The end of April was his next scan, it wasn’t promising as the tumors in his liver has increased in size and more tumors were found. Mike’s doctor is running out of options but found one last Chemotherapy and was able to get approved. It won’t shrink the tumors but hopefully contain them from growing any further. Mike has had to return back to work full-time while doing chemo. While working the chemotherapy causes him nausea and fatigue. This makes it very difficult on Mike and the whole family, not just physically but financially to take time off work his disability being cut in half.
Mike has been married to his wife Kathryn for 21 years has a son 24, and two daughters ages 15 and 9. He is very involved in there sports and activities and is always there to cheer them on. Mike was a volunteer firefighter for Rincon valley and has always been an upstanding member of our community and Sonoma County, when someone is in need of help Mike is always the one to provide it. Mike and his family attend the Mark West Neighborhood church and find strength in the Lord and help from family and friends. Mike is determined to someday walk his daughter’s down the aisle and hopefully watch them raise their families. Any donation will help when Mike needs to take time off from work during treatments and not have to worry about how bills are going to get paid.  In addition prayers are greatly needed too. Thank you for your support.
