"When I see an adult riding a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race." H.G. Wells
What do you get for the man who has everything he wants? Let me tell you a story....
A long time ago, a little boy was born in a small town in California. He lived on a farm with his sister and his brother and rode to the one room school house on his bicycle. As he grew up, his teachers noted how bright Gary was and encouraged him to get into gear and get a good education.
In highschool, he rode a motorcycle to impress Irene. They got married and had four children. When he went to University to study viticulture they would ride out to the vineyards with two kids each on their bikes; one in a basket and one on the back. Later, when they lived in England while Gary did his PhD they bought one big old bike that everyone could ride. In tandem, he and Irene had many adventures in England, Ceylon and Milwaukee.
Finally, Gary found the bike that fit him best; the extraordinary "ordinary" bike, the highwheel or pennyfarthing. He peddled this bike around the world and all the way across America into the lives and hearts of many wonderful people.
Artist, Anne Oshman was compelled to use Gary as her model when she created this impressively detailed mosaic.
On the eve of his 80th birthday , Gary is grateful for every turn of a peddle he can still manage. Gary has been a leading cyclist and continues to be a leading cycle historian with a life that continues to be full of cycling. He has so many bicycles that sometimes he toys with the idea of culling his collection. The one thing he does not have is an original bicycle mosaic.
Your generous contribution will help to purchase this uniquely personal gift that will be loved and cherished forever.
