Meet Taylor who is determined not to let his life-limiting illness define him, however his now, no longer suitable wheelchair, just might.
Full-time wheelchair user Taylor Henderson, from Barrow, suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) - a genetic disorder characterised by weakness as well as a progressive to eventually complete muscle degeneration.
There is currently no cure for muscular dystrophy, just a variety of treatments that can help to manage the condition, and an inclusive education system wonderfully provided by Furness College, not only to keep his mind active. This gives Taylor a profound sense of self-worth, value, and purpose.
Taylor has drastically declined over the last couple of years, with his disease taking its toll upon his spine, having a curvature, but also the degeneration of his muscles wreaking havoc within his body. The latest problem has been a suspected broken rib from merely trying to get comfortable in a child’s wheelchair that is no longer fit for purpose, him now being an adult.
Even his trips to the hospital at Newcastle are becoming a great struggle with no relief in sight, just a long period of convalescence from a mere trip in an adapted vehicle. So, after a period of 5 years and waiting since he was last assessed, despite the requirement of an assessment every 6 months as stated by Muscular Dystrophy UK.
AS Taylor has raised charity funds for National charities, such as Action Duchenne, as well as local charities with the most recent being for Sandside Lodge School. We want to apply the same charity and goodness of heart to this charitable, charming, and gifted young man.
This will be no small feat, for as with anything that is provided for the disabled community, it comes at a great premium. The cost as you will see below as stated, to give Taylor just a semblance of normality in a world that is only just beginning to open its eyes to those less able than the majority, has a price to pay.
In Taylors case, to maintain his current standard of living that will grant him the accessibility to the outdoors that he so loves, as well as the independence he so needs for his own piece of mind, the cost is substantial.
Being disabled in the UK as you will see is very expensive, so please, please share this page wherever you can to spread this as far and wide as possible to help support what the friends & family have started towards this cost and make some Magic for Taylor.
