Hi, my name is Lucy. I am soon to be sixty and living with a chronic autoimmune disease which is Rheumatoid disease. I have to take low dose chemo therapy to slow the progression of the illness. I have been sick for many years though I worked and lived life as best as possible under the circumstances. Now that I am older, I am on my own and have been able to hold down my apartment of many years despite challenges but then things suddenly took a very negative turn and I took the difficult step to reach out for help to the universe, friends and family to get through this extremely stressful and uncertain time in my life.
I have a dangerous mold issue in my bathroom that has not been dealt with and I had to involve HPD in a last desperate act to get the landlord to finally agree to fix it. As someone who is immunocompromised due to my RA treatment, living with untreated mold is a direct threat to my physical safety. This has caused a cascade of problems. One being, I've been served an eviction notice and since then as time went on I was not able to put aside the full amount of rent each month being under this eviction and the bathroom not being remedied, I cannot bring in a room renter which is my survival to keep my home in my later years here. While under this eviction my life is on hold and I am truly struggling in almost every aspect of my life.
I never anticipated it going this long and it has caused me to continue to struggle to keep up financially. With the help of many, I was gracefully pulled up from a full losing position to a more hopeful one, however, since I must wait till the next court date which is in some weeks again, I am hoping to raise what is needed to be fully ready or this can still result in an eviction.
As of recent, I have been able to get help from a legal aid organization who has stepped in to try to help me with the legal aspect. Between this new development and the help of kind people through my fundraiser, I will soon be able to close this difficult chapter and get back to my life once they finally safely remedy the bathroom and I can then get a room renter and take it from there. After this long difficult journey, I am still hopeful to update with a positive outcome and even photos to show how much of an impact you all have made in my life! All donations will be used for rent arrears.
A Bit About Me:
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. My life has been centered around creativity and service. My first job I worked in an Avant garde art gallery on the lower east side. That was my start off to years of very creative jobs. I worked in several Costume Jewelry companies creating pieces for shows, magazines etc. I worked in various areas of the fashion industry in the nineties. I went on to work a regular office job for years past my diagnosis in the late nineties of Rheumatoid disease. I performed course study work for Child Protective Services in a hospital years ago while in college, and volunteered for a Hospice for four years. Nearing sixty, my life is challenging, between worsening health issues and trying to navigate life but I am doing my best to stay focused and keep it together.
Thank you again for reading my story and for any help you can provide during one of the worst times of my life. With the amazing support so far, I know I am blessed even in negative times.
Much gratefulness, Lucy
