As some of you know, in mid-May, I put my belongings in storage and have been camping in Northern California. The reason for this was to try and clear my head from all of the stress that had been building over the years. After a few weeks of adjusting to the lifestyle, I was very happy and relaxed. Sleeping and eating well again. My EKG was 100% normal. I had been suffering from Atrial Fibrillation before that!!!
In October I wanted to continue camping through the winter. I chose Star City, an unofficial campground at McCloud Reservoir. I had a great camp all set up.
On January 7th also when I was informed of my Mothers passing, around 7pm, I was returning from a supply run to my campsite when I hit black ice and left the road tumbling down a 50' embankment and landing upside down. I regained consciousness sometime later. Everything was dark. I crawled out of the wreck to gain some sense of where I was at. I realized where I was and knew that It was improbable that I could hike out.
It was snowing so I was able to find my coat and crawl back into the wreck for some overhead protection.
all of the windows were broken out. My phone was in my coat pocket and while it was not damaged, there was no signal. I decided to wait out the night until there would be a possibility of passing traffic. I had a head injury and was bleeding but had nothing to stop it. Placed my hand over the injury and under my head. Every hour or two I threw up. I would start to shiver from the cold but knew that if I shivered, I would drain my energy and die. I forced myself to stay calm and stop the shivering.
At 8am I heard a vehicle drive by. It is a dead end road so I knew that they would be coming back by at some time. Everything was snow and Ice out. My feet had frozen during the night so all that I could manage was baby steps. I took an hour to reach the road. I found a rock and waited for a half an hour for the vehicle to return. got a ride into McCloud and the wonderful folks at Chevron called 911 for me. Thanks to McCloud Fire and Rescue who performed triage and first aid. I was transported to Mercy Medical Mt. Shasta Emergency and received more care. Thank God for the warm blankets!!!
After a CT scan. they found a subdural hematoma. It was decided that I needed to be transported to Redding Mercy Medical for further treatment. As my head cleared some, my right foot started hurting. I had broken the 5th metatarsal. After a second CT scan on Saturday, the hematoma had healed and it was decided to have a screw installed in my foot Sunday morning. All went well and I was discharged Monday evening.
With all of my camping gear in the woods and storage, I have been staying at a motel, not easy on Social Security Disability,, until I can arrange a vehicle to get back out there. I chose $5000 as something that I would be able to replace my poor 96 4wd Ranger.
Thank you.
