I stopped a hate-crime and LAPD arrested me for it
TLDR: I stopped a hate crime and the cops illegally arrested me and now I'm out 6.5k
Background on me:
I'm 23, non binary, newly on hormones, and its bad enough i got to pay them out of pocket right now, and although I only work 4 days a week, 3 of those days are minimum 16 hours usually 12pm to 4am or 7am to 4am. And now I have a new ordeal to grapple with.
The actual story: On Monday, November 25th 2024 at 4:34 AM on the LA Metro La Cienega/Jefferson station, on my way home from work. A large, white, homeless man aggressed towards a much shorter brown man under the notion that people of color don't belong in this country asserting that "we don't need your kind in this country, you're a piece of s**t, we kill people like you [here]. Submit! Submit to me..." while brandishing a gold club in one hand and a bike wheel in his other (like he was holding a sword and a shield.) As the victim is holding his hands up begging to be left alone as he is just waiting for the train.
Having witnessed this transpire over the course of a few seconds and being the only other person present, rather than taking the train towards downtown that had just arrived, I decided that I needed to step, especially once I heard the aggressor mention m*rder.
Upon stepping in, I managed to get him on the ground and at the same time the train going towards Santa Monica arrives, at which the man I helped thanked me and hopped on. While trying to get rid of any weapons the man was holding on to for my own safety and anyone who would come by him once I leave (didn't end up happening) he then charged at me again and again, making note of his size advantage stating that he could easily kill me, until he got me on the ground, however I was able to get out from underneath him at which I slammed the wheel he dropped onto his head which finally made him relent and stumble away onto the tracks. I then immediately alerted the authorities on the Metro emergency line that there was a man on the tracks of the train going towards Santa Monica and giving the brief story about what had happened, however the operator (like an asshole) accused me of assulting him [without reason] and that the police were on their way to arrest ME! Naturally I told her I just wanted to let them know and promptly leave.
However, the story is only getting started. In trying to leave the cops pull up on me and of course they immediately pull the guns and start screaming at me, they love doing that. Mind you, they don't even known I'm the person they're looking for. They handcuff me, don't tell me if I'm under arrest, read my my Miranda's rights, or ask if okay. Two cops go to "check out" what happened on the platform, and when they return they ask me what happened, and I tell them the exact story from above. They put me in the back of the squad car and take me to the station, all the while they're discussing the video from the scene.
As the whole thing was on video.
We get to the station and the three officers who arrested me have finally gotten the video and one POINTS AT ME and says:
"It happend almost exactly how he said"
Then, the officer who cuffed me, tells him
"Yeah but, I want to meet my booking quota..."
Afterwards, they pass me off to the morning shift, throw me in the cell and I tell them that I wanted to make a call or speak to an attorney... "I'll let them know you said that"
Which was lie
They get me booked and take me to the LA county jail and pass me to the jailers (because I'm being charged with a felony) get my prints and mugshot (by about 8 am). Throw me in a cell and that's it. I've already mentioned again that I haven't gotten my call or attorney yet, the jailer brushes me off and says I need to tell the patrol. I tell then next officers I see, says the same thing. I tell the next one I see, tells me to talk to the other guy. Talk to the next guy, tells me to wait, tell the next guy says he'll ask. Then finally, after 6 times of asking, one officer tells me they don't do calls after dark......
The next morning i ask for like the 3rd time when my court date is (as it is my right to know) one cop tells me that because its thanksgiving week im not gonna be able to see a judge until next Monday, so i tell him "okay so I really need to make my call now!" FINALLY, AFTER 24 HOURS OF NO ONE KNOWING WHERE I AM AND 7 TRIES. They let me make my call and about 6 hours after calling my family they bail me out and thankfully because of bail bonds they only paid 3 of the 30 thousand of my bail. Also, turns out my court date was December 17th.
The next day I went to see the only lawyer I knew of to give myself the best possible chance of getting acquited and that came out to another 3.5k.
As of now Feb 26 2025 we haven't heard from the DA, even on my court date, nothing happend, wasn't filed or thrown out so now I'm just waiting.... and my lawyer doesn't want me to get ahead of myself regarding suing the LAPD for their bullshit. Although, I'll definitely try.
Anyway, I'm just trying to get rid of this debt and forget about everything. Honestly I forgot I could even do something like this.
I put my proof of court appearance below, but I don't know if it's visible...
