On Saturday, April 24th, my boyfriend and I were driving through Scipio Center when he spotted a dog standing in the middle of the road in the pouring rain.
We turned around just in time to watch a car come so close to hitting her that I truly thought she had been struck. She looked completely helpless — freezing, soaked, terrified, and running up to passing cars like she was searching for someone who never came back for her.
Something in me knew I couldn’t leave her there.
What’s strange is… I almost didn’t even go that day. I was supposed to stay home, but at the last minute something told me to go. Looking back now, I truly believe I was meant to find her.
For over two hours in the cold rain, I sat on the ground trying to gain her trust. Neighbors told us they had been seeing her wandering alone for nearly two weeks and that no one — not even the dog warden — had been able to catch her.
She would run from everyone else.
But every time I called to her, she would stop and look at me.
Eventually, she hid behind a trailer, and I quietly sat nearby talking softly to her while the rain poured down around us. She was absolutely terrified. I could see fear, exhaustion, and sadness in her eyes. I had food, but she was too scared to even care about eating.
Then something happened I will never forget for the rest of my life.
She slowly came closer to me, sniffing me carefully. I looked at her and said, “I’m never going to let anyone hurt you ever again.”
And I swear to God… she gently put her paw on me and let out the biggest sigh.
That was the moment I knew she was coming home with me.
I named her Zena.
We believe Zena is a young German Shepherd/Shar Pei mix around 6–8 months old. When we found her, she was severely underweight, with her ribs and hip bones visible beneath her fur. She had painful yeast infections in all four paws so severe that she could barely walk across grass or pavement without limping.
She is terrified of strangers — especially men — and shows clear signs of trauma and abuse. Sudden movements scare her. Being left alone breaks her heart. The first few nights, she cried herself to sleep if I left the room.
And yet underneath all of that fear… is the sweetest soul imaginable.
She follows me everywhere. She lays her head on me. She loves belly rubs. She’s learning commands, learning to ask to go outside, and slowly learning what it feels like to be safe and loved for the very first time.
This dog wants to live. She wants love. She wants a family.
She’s just scared.
We have already contacted multiple places for help, and several immediately suggested euthanasia if she showed “any signs of aggression.” But fear is not hopelessness. Trauma is not a death sentence.
After speaking with Canine Barkyard, they believe Zena has incredible potential and have offered her a spot in an intensive 6-week board-and-train rehabilitation program. This program would work on:
fear rehabilitation
socialization
confidence building
separation anxiety
resource guarding
obedience and structure
The cost for the program alone is approximately $6,000, not including ongoing food, supplies, veterinary needs, and building a safe outdoor enclosure for her.
Canine Cove has generously agreed to help with her vaccines and spay once she is stable enough, and I am endlessly grateful for that support.
I know times are hard for everyone right now, and asking for help is not easy for me. But I truly believe this dog deserves a chance at life. In just a few short days, she has already made unbelievable progress.
She is not broken.
She is traumatized.
She is scared.
And she is trying so hard.
If you can donate, share, pray, or even simply help spread Zena’s story, it would mean the world to us.
Where donations will go:
6-week behavioral rehabilitation & board-and-train program: ~$6,000
Food, supplies, crate, leash/muzzle, enrichment items: ~$800
Safe outdoor enclosure & insulated shelter setup: ~$700
Emergency veterinary and behavioral needs during rehabilitation: remaining funds
Any funds raised beyond Zena’s direct needs will be donated to Canine Cove Rescue to help other animals in need.
I promised her nobody would ever hurt her again.
And I intend to keep that promise. ❤️
