My name is Nathan Bullock. I am 30 years old and have Norrie Disease, a very rare condition, which results in total blindness from birth and progressive hearing impairment caused by vascular insufficiency. This vascular impairment is not limited to the eyes and ears. Norrie's Disease has caused damage to other parts of my body, including my legs, and, to add insult to injury, my male body parts and associated functions.

Although this is very personal and private to me, I am also sharing my story to raise awareness of this genetic disorder. This disease is so rare that research dollars do not reach the community of those affected with Norrie Disease.

Almost a year ago, I had two surgeries to correct my male functionality. Instead of a positive life-changing procedure, they resulted in catastrophic failure of everyday bodily functions we all take for granted.

In my quest for independence, I mastered the use of a cane and later, was fortunate to get a guide dog from Guide Dog Foundation in New York. Her name is Alice. She helps me more than words can express. She is a yellow lab golden retriever mix. She is the most wonderful guide and is my best friend and confidant. She guided me throughout college, in any weather (although she HATES rain) crossing streets and leading me down crowded hallways to my classes. Now, she helps me navigate around just about any obstacle in my path. She is my eyes and ears to the world.

Following surgery, I had to have a catheter for an extended amount of time. It is virtually impossible to hold onto and protect a catheter bag while holding Alice’s harness and leash. During this time of recuperation, Alice suffered and was confused, feeling my pain and frustration due to my immobility. The worse thing for a guide dog is not being able to work and do what they were bred to do. The bond we have is strong and something I cannot risk breaking.

I hope this short history helps you understand my heartfelt and dire request for your help.

To correct complications from the first two surgeries, I need yet two more surgeries. The first is needed in the next month, followed by a second one shortly thereafter. If I do not have these surgeries, the doctors will not be able to repair damage caused by scar tissue around my urethra, which could result in having a catheter for the rest of my life.

I cannot afford the next surgeries. I am asking for donations to regain and ensure the ability to urinate without the assistance of a catheter, as well as to reduce scar tissue, pain and spasms I have had since surgery.

My health insurance has denied these surgeries, which will cost $30,000 or more. The doctor has appealed the insurance company’s decision, but they will NOT pay for the surgeries. I have to travel out of state for the surgeries and recovery period as the doctor said I have to stay nearby his office for follow-up appointments and close monitoring. Only a couple of surgeons in the US will perform these difficult and delicate surgeries given my specific medical complications.

Thank you for reading this. Time is of the essence.
Alice and I sincerely appreciate any amount you can donate for my surgeries.
