Help Rich Schmedake. I mean screw cancer, right?

In May 2018, Richard was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Throughout the course of his treatment the cancer has spread to his liver. The exceptional medical staff at the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center have gone above and beyond developing an aggressive treatment plan for him. These treatments have been physically and mentally draining for Richard. In November 2019, his doctors doubled his chemotherapy dosage and it nearly killed him. He was hospitalized for nearly a month, and recently returned home for hospice home care.

Richard is our uncle. We've known him our entire lives. All of the cousins in our family have their own stories to share about Richard. Some of them involve him attempting to feed us cat food, or dangling our heads over a flushing toilet, or telling us that he cooked our french toast with onions. Most of them involve him graciously hosting us while we visited him in NYC. Richard is and has always been the consummate host and tour guide. It didn't matter that he had been to the tourist traps of New York a thousand times, he was always happy to show people around his city.

If you were ever in the city around the holidays, then you probably attended his famous, extravagant Thanksgiving feast or Xmas party. There's always plenty of food, and at least 20 different types of pie. There's something magical about the city  this time of year, but NYC's best kept secret is Richard's holiday party. This is where he's truly in his element.

We all know cancer sucks, and so do all the medical bills.

This last visit to the hospital has put him in a difficult financial position. He can no longer work, and he needs help to pay for medical bills, basic necessities, and his rent. Sadly, Richard won't be able to host a beloved holiday party this year. You can help him through this holiday season by relieving some of his financial worries. Richard has always gone out of his way to help his friends and family, and we're asking for your generosity to help him.

No donation is too small, and every little bit helps.  All funds go directly into his personal account.

$15 cover the daily co-pay needed for hospice care
$120 covers a physical therapy visit
$300 covers weekly expenses for his care-takers
$1250 covers half the annual deductible that starts in December
$2500 covers rent for one month
Then there are the medical supplies needed...

Uncle Richard is the type of guy who forms life-long friendships and has never met a stranger. He goes out of his way to show his love for his family and friends. As his family, we have been absolutely overwhelmed by the number of friends and well-wishers who stopped by to visit him in the hospital. This is truly a testament to the impact he has had on so many people's lives.

On behalf of Richard, we thank you.
