I received an email from Amazon (I thought) stating that someone in Canada had purchased an item using my account that cost $572.00 Of course, I panicked and called the 800 number listed on the order confirmation.. He answered, "Amazon, how can I help you"?
He had me go to my computer and get into my bank account. (mistake 2). He had me enter my refund amount and my hands were shaking and I accidentally typed in $4572.00 which went into my bank account. I saw the money in our account and he said "oh my goodness, he could lose his job over this". He checked with his manager and had us drive to go to Target store and purchase (8) $500 gift cards. So I wake up Gary and off we go. (mistake 3). We get home and he tells me to scratch off the back of each card and read the numbers on the back (mistake 4). So this gives him control of the gift cards and we're out $4,000 of our bill and food money.
Then I had to pay $150 to have the Geek Squad clean my computer. Apparently, he took a screenshot of my bank account and digitally changed our balance to look like $4572.00 was added to our account. (my only defense was that I thought I was looking at my bank account not a fake one). When the fog cleared and I realized it was a scam it was too late for us to get our money back. Now I realize the whole thing was my naivety and stupidity that I didn't realize it was a scam. I've been dealing with Amazon for many years and had faith that I was speaking with them.
I know I probably do not deserve your help but believe me when I say "we would appreciate any assistance from my friends and family members". I can promise that I will never be scammed like that again.
During this terrible pandemic I realize that budgets are tight but any small amount would be greatly appreciated.
I love you all and wish you a better 2021 in health and life for everyone.
