Hi, my name is Beatrice. I’m 26 years old, and I’ve just received an offer to study for a Master’s degree in Computer Science at University College London.

Growing up, my late mother would always tell me, “If they can do it, then why can’t you?” It was her way of reminding me that I could achieve anything if I worked hard enough. For a long time, I believed that as long as I put in the effort, nothing could stop me. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to understand that it’s not always that straightforward.

Sometimes, the difference isn’t ability or ambition. It’s whether you have the financial means to take the next step. Without the financial support, this opportunity will be taken away from me. I’ve worked incredibly hard to reach this point. But now, I’m facing the possibility of losing this opportunity, not because I’m not capable, but because I can’t afford it.

Where my journey started

At the University of Warwick, I developed an interest in the impact of technology on society. I wrote a dissertation on technological inequality, exploring how systems can reinforce barriers for Black women in education and employment, whereby I achieved 94%. From there, I realised that I didn’t just want to analyse technology. I wanted to contribute towards building it.

So I did, I taught myself how to code. I completed the Black Codher Full-Stack Development programme and the AWS re/Start Cloud Computing programme. From there, I moved into industry, working as a software developer.

Now, I’ve been accepted into the MSc Computer Science programme at UCL, which is the next step that will provide me with the theoretical foundation to become a stronger, more impactful engineer.

The challenge I’m facing

I am due to begin in September 2026. However, I do not have the financial backing to make this possible.

The total cost of the degree is £21,500. While I will receive a postgraduate loan, it only covers part of the tuition, leaving a shortfall of over £8,105 before even considering living and commuting costs.

I am doing everything I can. I am currently working full-time as an Engineer and also taking on additional work, including hairdressing, to save as much as possible. But even with this, it is not enough to cover both tuition and the cost of living during my studies.

I’ve come this far through hard work and persistence. I just need help getting across the final line.

This fundraiser is here to help me cover as much of my tuition as possible so I can use some of the money I earn from my jobs to cover basic living expenses while at university. I'm doing everything I can to contribute myself, and your support helps me bridge the gap between what student finance offers and my tuition fee.

Why this matters

I didn't start this journey just for myself. It started from the realisation that without representation in the technological space, certain communities will inevitably be marginalised. I want to be the kind of engineer I didn’t see growing up. Someone who builds technology with awareness, fairness, and purpose. Alongside my work, I support communities in developing digital safety skills, helping people stay informed and protected in an increasingly digital world. This master's is my foundation; the one chance I have to be that representation I didn't have growing up.
