Running miles for smiles: Taking on the Yorkshire Marathon!
Hey everyone!
At the start of this year, running 3K felt like climbing Everest for me. I remember vividly running 3km and throwing up, thinking, “What a stupid idea this is!” Fast forward to now, and I’m training to conquer the Yorkshire Marathon in York on October 20th, 2024!
This journey has been anything but easy. There have been moments where I thought my legs would fall off, and times when I seriously considered if crawling was a viable marathon strategy. But here I am, pushing through, all for a fantastic cause.
I’m running to support the Charlie Dallas Lancaster Foundation, a fantastic charity created in memory of Charlie Dallas Lancaster, a kind and caring individual who dedicated his life to helping others. The foundation supports a variety of charities across York, North Yorkshire, and beyond, with a special focus on mental health and suicide prevention. Mental health is a crucial issue that affects so many people, and the foundation works tirelessly to provide support, raise awareness, and offer resources to those in need.
On a personal note, I know how important it is to talk about mental health. I’ve struggled with my own mental health from time to time, and it’s been a tough journey. But running has given me a way to cope and push through those difficult moments. This marathon is not just a physical challenge for me, but a testament to overcoming mental hurdles as well.
Your support would mean the world to me. Whether it’s a donation, or just some words of encouragement, every bit helps. And a huge shoutout to everyone who’s been training and running with me – you know who you are & you guys are the real MVPs!
Let’s make this marathon not just about crossing the finish line, but about making a positive impact together. Thank you for being part of this journey with me. Let’s do this!
With gratitude and determination,
Sam McCartney
