Bear & Storm - the best dogs EVER!!

This is the story of my two dogs Bear and Storm who got sick pretty quickly from eating jerky treats.

Bear, and his sister Storm, were presented to the University of Florida Emergency Service with suspicion of acquired Fanconi Syndrome. This is an uncommon syndrome that can be seen secondary to the ingestion of jerky treats in dogs. They acquire an injury to their kidney that causes them to excrete important compounds, like glucose and electrolytes, and drastically affects their ability to maintain their own hydration, among other symptoms. Dogs can potentially fully recover from this but some do succumb to the effects of this kidney injury.

Both Storm and Bear underwent treatment at the University of Florida Veterinary Hospital. Storm recovered and was able to be discharged to her home after 8 days, but Bear had many complications and setbacks, causing him to have a prolonged stay in the hospital of over 3 weeks. Throughout his stay in hospital, Bear has captured the hearts of the many doctors, nurses, students, and assistants who have had a hand in his care. His spirited personality brought joy and laughter to those around him. Occasionally, Bear has lived up to his mischievous side, earning himself a reputation as a bit of a troublemaker. He has shown remarkable progress and resilience in his journey towards recovery, all while continuing to melt our hearts with his puppy eyes and silly antics.

Bear’s owners have never failed to visit him daily, despite not living locally, and have thanked his team at every opportunity. They are among the kindest, most dedicated owners we’ve worked with. Their steadfast commitment and compassion have been a shining example of the bond between humans and their animal companions. The extensive and specialized care Bear has required has resulted in significant financial expenses. We are reaching out to our community for support to help alleviate the financial burden of Bear's veterinary care. Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference in Bear's journey towards recovery and we cannot think of a more deserving family.
