A Dreamer who needs help paying for college
Hello my name is Sandy Estefania Romero Capetillo. This 2019-2020 school year I will begin college at The University of Texas at Austin. When I first started high school I had lost the aspiration for attending college because of my status in this country. I am currently under the protection of the immigration policy, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), but it has not always been that way. Throughout my first two years of high school, I struggled with feeling secure in a future where college, or even a job, was possible. But in my junior year of high school, I decided to take a duel credit class, Composition 1. I was doubtful that I would succeed but went in with an open mind and persevered. Our first paper was an expressive essay where we had to explain how to write that specific type of essay, while simultaneously telling a story. Within this essay, we had to discuss a cathartic experience. I had writer’s block and didn’t even know how to begin the paper. The self-doubt and negative talk almost immediately began to flood my mind. That’s when I had my “a-ha” moment. I realized why I did not always give most things in life, particularly school, my all. For so long, I assumed that my hard work would never pay off. I’d mistakenly believed that my status in the United States was the only thing that was going to determine my future – not my education. I realized that I was so much more than just an undocumented individual. My education is highly important because it is something that will stay with me forever and something I have control over, unlike my immigration status. At one point in my life, being undocumented seemed like a reason not to try, but now it is the reason I do try,
Being able to say I will be attend The University of Texas at Austin this fall is a dream come true, but my dream does not stop there I have great ambitions like becoming an Immigration and Criminal Lawyer. What I want to study at UT Austin is political communications in preparation for Law school. Being a lawyer would allow me to help those who are in need; which is something that is very important to me. The most authentic reason for my desire to become a lawyer is to help those who believe that their voice doesn’t matter or that they are not entitled to the same justice as everyone else because they are undocumented, an immigrant, or a minority U.S. citizen.
This being said I have created this GoFundMe because although I have been accepted to UT Austin paying for it is far more difficult. I spent all my senior year looking and applying for scholarships. Although I have my DACA I was unable to apply to a grand majority of them because they required citizenship or residency and DACA is only a job permit. Although I do plan to work while attending school I know that that will not be enough to cover it. Along with my tuition, room and board, books, personal expenditure, etc. I also have to worry about high fees for the renovation of my DACA permit which gives me the ability to be in here legally and grants me the ability to work. Thank you so much for the time you all have given me, every dollar counts and if you cannot donate please share my story. Thank you!
