Blind Faith - Legally Blind Athlete HYROX bound
Donation protected
I’m Alpha Dawn or Jules — a 47-year-old legally blind adaptive athlete, with 8% remanning vision,a single mum, and survivor of the fight of my life and my sight.
I’m so excited to have the chance to compete in HYROX Melbourne this December! To make this happen, I’m fundraising to cover the costs for me, my support worker, and my guide runner.
I’ve just completed my first HYROX competition in 1:58:43 in Sydney — my first athletic event in 27 years — this time as a legally blind competitor—I am hungry to beat my time.
Now you see me weighing a healthier 54kg, train regularly, and very proud to represent a growing community of adaptive athletes pushing past every limit life has thrown at us.
But two years ago, I was nearly gone.
I was suffering the side effects of long-term mental health medication, extreme weight gain—once weighed 104kg , liver damage, and eventually severe weight-loss — which lead to severe malnutrition. My body dropped to 42kg with little muscle tone. That’s when I developed nutritional optic neuropathy, a condition that caused sudden, permanent vision loss due to lack of nutrients getting through to my optic nerve.
I have spent the last year and a half rebuilding—relearning myself and my environments and Daily life Skills. Negotiating public transport now that I can no longer drive myself with my children where we need to go.
Now, I’m here to Raise Awareness and Funding for a cause.
Why I’m Raising Funds
My next goal is to compete at HYROX Melbourne, and continue to represent adaptive athletes — especially those with visual impairments — on a national and global stage.
Your support will help cover:
• ✈️ Flights to Melbourne
• ️ Accommodation during the event
• ️ HYROX registration and race fees
• Training and gear to keep going

My Bigger Mission
This is more than a Hyrox race. It’s my legacy.
I want to:
- [ ] Advocate for independence — because NDIS doesn’t cover everything, and people deserve options now, not “someday”
- [ ] Raise awareness, to what caused my eye condition.
- [ ] Raise awareness for other adaptive athletes who train and compete.
- [ ] Create easy access to Low Vision products and service for people newly navigating vision loss and disability.
- [ ] Create an online community for people with Different abilities to find support groups.
- [ ] Public speaking to youth and adults in communities to show what’s possible after disability
my Vision Is Global — pardon the pun..
I’m not stopping at Melbourne. Keep reading
I want to go international — compete, speak, and inspire others to reclaim their power. I want kids and adults with new diagnoses to hear my story and know:
Disability is not defeat. You are stronger than you think.
