Najma means star.
Najma’s brilliance lit up every corner of this world and helped us dream of all the new worlds we have to build. She talked to us. To all the smalls, the bigs, and in-betweens. She led us in chants, reminding us always that it was our duty to win. She led us with labyrinths, with lectures, with love. She sparked it up and held our faces to the flame.
Najma did not hesitate. Her strength flowed in and through and out again. Like her breath. Fire. Water. Air. Earth. Ether. She flowed through philosophers and warriors and street fights with a bright scarf and strong coffee. Her passion for young people was boundless. It was as personal as taking a young person home safely or braiding their hair slowly. It was as powerful as leading the struggles for a National Student Bill of Rights, for youth jobs in Boston, for the Youth Pass on the MBTA, and for peace between youth. For young people at Tent City and the YMCA, for the artists of ALA, for youth organizers at BYOP and across the country, she was a leader who listened, a teacher who learned, an adult who understood.
Najma blessed us with spirit. And precision. And rigor that blew our minds. She transformed what we saw as possible, like a dance move at a late night house party or a tag on the side of a building.
She brought us together. She sat us in circles, she gathered us around tables, she moved with us in battle formations. She left us with lessons upon lessons upon lessons. About how to make this world. How to write our own histories. How to remember.
We remember. Najma. Sister. Daughter. Auntie. Revolutionary.
